FAA furloughs 4,000 employees without pay
The FAA released this statement on their website today announcing the furlough of 4,000 employees:

"Congressional authorization for several FAA programs expired at 12:01 a.m. on July 23. As a result, nearly 4,000 FAA employees are now furloughed without pay. Those employees affected by the lapse in authorization have been notified by their managers and will receive a furlough notice via FAA email.

Employees paid from the FAAs Operations account, which is funded from both the Trust Fund and the general fund, are not affected by the lack of an extension to our legislative authority. While this lapse in FAA's authorization affects thousands of public and private sector jobs, it is important to note that the safety of the flying public will not be compromised.

1. Does this have anything to do with the NASA employees...
working on the shuttle mission? I heard on some news program yesterday that exact number, 4,000. It said that 4,000 NASA employees would be getting "pink slips" now that the mission had ended.

4. Thanks lonestarnot...
I just didn't know. However, in that case, that means we actually have 8,000 federal workers getting the boot, doesn't it? That is actually even sadder. Moreover, we don't really know what the actual number is, only the ones that hit the media. I'm sure many don't get any media review. :sigh:

3. That's how meaner and leaner works for public servants.
Furloughs are forced layoffs with no pay. Sometimes, depending on the state and the source of funding, public employees may not be eligible for unemployment either.
