PHOTO of the DAY (JAPAN)

Schoolchildren feel the touch of a new cedar desk and a chair donated by the Miyazaki Prefectural Government in Yamamoto, Miyagi Prefecture, on July 22. Miyazaki Prefecture donated 230 sets of desks and chairs made of cedar trees from the prefecture to students of Nakahama Elementary School and Yamashita Daini Elementary School. The two schools rented space for their classrooms from another school in Miyagi Prefecture as they suffered damage from the March 11 tsunami. (Mainichi)

The annual Soma Nomaoi samurai warrior festival, which dates back over 1,000 years, begins in the Soma region of Fukushima Prefecture on July 23 on a smaller scale than in the past due to the ongoing crisis at the Fukushima No. 1 Nuclear Power Plant. The festival's main attraction -- the Kacchu Keiba or a ceremonial horse race featuring men wearing heavy armor on horseback -- and other events were canceled. But about 80 "horse soldiers," down sharply from 500 in the past, paraded from Soma Nakamura Shrine to the streets of Soma. (Mainichi)

See you later: Yakult's Kazuhiro Hatakeyama hits a three-run homer for the Central League in the first game of the NPB All-Star Series on Friday in Nagoya. The CL won 9-4 over the Pacific League.

3. I Watched A Japanese Baseball Game
a few weeks ago while in Japan. Loved how the fans have balloons and at the end of the game, they release them. Also interesting how a couple of the team members come on the field and thank the audience, talk about the game. It's quite the celebration!
