True Companion launches new, innovative sex robot - with personality and moods

Last year, the U.S.-based company True Companion introduced the world to Roxxxy, the first sex robot.

Programmed with a personality, a sense of touch and even its own heartbeat and circulatory system, the robot is the first step in what British chess player and artificial intelligence expert David Levy predicts will become a trend in the near future.

In his 2007 book, "Love and Sex with Robots," Levy describes a future in which "robots will become significant sexual partners for humans, answering needs that other people are unable or unwilling to satisfy."

Sherry Turkle, an MIT professor and author of the book "Alone Together," shares Levy's view. At a psychology conference in New Orleans, Turkle described meeting a grad student who told Turkle she would "trade in her boyfriend ‘for a sophisticated Japanese robot' if the robot would produce what she called ‘caring behavior.'"

<snip>

"The broader goal of the company is still to take artificial personalities into the mainstream, beyond sex toys," Hines said.

A moody sex robot? I wouldn't think that would be a big selling point. Maybe we'll get to the day when people actually choose a robot over a human partner although I can't imagine why.

3. And if you're impotent to start with, don't forget the Viagra!
This whole sex business is quickly becoming so - artificial.

4. Artificial, but life like
Imagine another 50 years of technology. I could see some people choosing the artificial over real.

8. For people who are functionally illiterate at 'the game'...
...it's a viable alternative, and becoming moreso all the time.

There were more than a couple interesting Twilight Zone's that touched on robots as family and companions (although not to the sexual extent that I'm aware of).

13. They have Roxxxy and Rocky.
You could buy a dozen and make some hilarious robot-on-robot porn videos.

An earlier version of Roxxxy served in Bush's Cabinet:

14. Real Doll
There's a BBC documentary about Real Dolls and their owners, which actually kind of freaked me out a bit. This looks like the next step.

And if I recall correctly, Robert Anton Wilson predicted this sort of thing. I think there was a science fiction short story, too, about a man growing old while his robotic love doll life companion remained young. Hmm.

24. So now robots are going to be able to turn me down?
Excuse me while I go wander off to drown my sorrows that women, even robots, like guys with personality, charm, confidence and/or looks instead those of boring, charmless, insecure and loathsome as myself. I mean it's not my fault I look like a cross between Frankenstein's monster and Quasimodo and have the personality of Droopy. :P
