Does anyone else on DU worry that there will be Breivik copycats |
|
here in the US in the very near future?
It seems to me that these armed nutjobs are broke, and angry....and ready to flip out-
Scary as hell.

2. No doubt there will be. |

And we still don't want to regulate guns at least as much as we regulate driving.

4. Unfortunately, yes, certainly a probability. |
|
I'm afraid it may very well be inevitable. We don't exactly have a shortage of pro-fascists, hardcore racists, anti-Semites, and other riffraff in this country, and the sad truth is, I think we've been long overdue for a massive explosion of extreme fringe right wing terrorism. :-(

6. no, he wasn't. I don't care what a BBC reporter said. He made |
|
McVeigh look like a pussy-terrorist. McVeigh and his friend parked the truck and split.
This guy didn't climb a clock tower either...he stood there shooting at close range.
This is a different, more defined type of rage.
I am worried about the nuts in the US. I think there will be copycats.

|
there isn't anything to compare to what this guy did. You can combine every school shooting, the unabomber, and McVeigh and possibly come up with the a combination over a 25 year period that matches this.

but just because Columbine didn't reach the magnitude of the Norway killings doesn't mean that the shooters didn't intend for the death toll to be much higher.

Not saying the fear is unfounded. I just don't have the energy and have to draw the line somewhere.

I do agree with you that there enough other things of a more immediate nature to worry about and I, like you, do not have the energy to worry about a whole lot more.

17. That is a disturbing thread, |
|
I couldn't make myself read the entire thing but what I read seemed to be desperate attempts to either excuse him or blame the whole thing on "leftists" somehow.
It's like they can't believe that someone who shares their beliefs could possibly be homicidally insane.

29. I only read the first page, but... |
|
it didn't look to me like they were "defending his character" as much as saying (quite rightly, IMO) that it's very possible for someone to look normal while an internal pressure cooker is getting ready to explode in some horrible way.
Also...it does seem that they're withholding judgement on his political leanings (and perhaps his motives) until they learn for a fact that he is what he appears to be...a RW fruitcake. One Freeper said he thought that the manifesto looked like something a LW person would write in an effort to LOOK like a RW'er.
Which, really, isn't that far away from something that might be said here by some who would probably want a LW crazy to really be a RW crazy in disguise... posing as a LW'er.
What will be interesting will be how they'll respond if/when it's ever proven that the guy really was a RW nut. Will they defend him or his actions? We can only wait to see....

16. Well, it could be argued that Breivik was copycatting McVeigh |
|
as far as the car bomb went. Buildings in Norway must be a bit sturdier than those in OKC--they were damaged but still standing so loss of life was low.
The new wrinkle is slaughtering children.
But yes, these monsters appear periodically and they're always from the far right, either religious far right fringe or political far right fringe.

|
I'm sure he's perfectly aware of McVeigh, Columbine, and any other terrorist act that has happened during the recent 20th and 21st century.
But to answer your question... yeah, there very well could be more people doing crazy things like him.
I'm sure the extreme rightists don't like the way the world is headed and are becoming more desperate.

Especially when it's whipped up to an insane frenzy by radio talk show hosts and people like Palin, Backmann and other self appointed teabaggers. Hell! Just this morning I've read of two fatal shootings at two so-called parties. One party was for a boy's birthday.

- Oklahoma city, Va Tech Massacre, etc. Nuts are everywhere and no doubt will strike again. I just don't think that the crazies of the world make their plans based on the insane actions of others. I think the voices in their heads like to be a bit more creative than that.

|
Va Tech shooter = non political self-loathing, just wants others to hurt as he does OK City = driven by right wing fringe political ideas, wanted to make a statement
Both psychopaths, yes, but with a different agenda. Important to make the distinction.
