#f@ckyouwashington hashtag takes Twitter by storm
Published on July 24th, 2011
Written by: Muriel Kane

- snip -

The hashtag #fuckyouwashington is currently making the rounds in just that fashion. As explained in a post at tagdef.com, “Thousands of tweets erupted in a matter of hours on #Jul23 protesting the US’s failed debt ceiling talks and general policies. Spurred by @JeffJarvis . Seen by some as part of #WorldRevolution or #USRevolution.”

- snip -

Although the tag may have been inspired by the current impasse over raising the debt ceiling, it seems to have released a much wider sense of frustration. Within a few hours, message boards like Democratic Underground were gathering some of the best tweets using the tag.

Other tweets gathered by CBSNews blasted Washington for everything from the handling of last year’s Gulf of Mexico oil spill to the criminalization of marijuana to going after WikiLeaks while not holding Bush administration officials accountable for turture.

Jarvis is a journalism professor at the City University of New York, an expert on new media, and the author of What Would Google Do? Late on Saturday evening, he tweeted, “OK, my fellow citizens, it’s up to you now,” as though he felt content with what he had accomplished, but since then he has continued to promote use of the tag in his own tweets.

Otherwise, :applause:

6. Twitter by Storm? Sounds like a cheap cologne to me.
By the makers of Old Spice.

Which by the way, they're recycling used up models now for their ads.
I saw their new ad the other day with Fabio and I thought "Good for them for recycling those older models like that, keeps those guys from dumpster diving."

36. I saw an interview with Fabio and some girl
a number of years ago, when he was the biggest model on romance novels, and he is not a dumb guy. Apparently he has quite the business mind and has been investing for himself for years. He decided against a business manager, because he wanted to know exactly where his money was going.

7. Just checked the feed, and right now it's dominated by meta-comments
instead of substantive complaints against Washington. Let's DU it!

11. People commenting on the phenomenon rather than adding "f-you w" tweets.
That may be because, as Luminous Animal said, Twitter's put a limit on it; but s/he also said, the numbers are captured on Trendsmap at http://trendsmap.com/topic/%23fuckyouwashington --

.

14. They want to make sure that there isn't a concerted effort to game the system
They killed it from trending (probably because of the word fuck) and then they put a limit on it (like a speed bump) to make sure that it is thousands of people posting it as opposed to 10 people posting it 1,000 times.

29. And Twitter is, after all, a corporation.
Slightly less evil than Facebook and Google, it seems; but I wouldn't rely on that too far.

This is why we need facilities owned by the USERS. Facilities like Facebook et al., but owned cooperately by the users, like credit unions (which were unaffected by the financial meltdown, b.t.w.)

15. Not with the word fuck in the tag.
They killed it last night when it started trending and that just made it more popular.

They also have a limit on it, so easiest to see all responses through the Searchtastic feed:

24. And this is why Americans will NEVER take to the streets in protest.
They can sit safely at home and vent all their frustrations at the keyboard. Once their frustrations have been vented, they calm down and go back to watching "reality" TV and the whole phenomenon blows over in three to five days.

25. What streets, and with what money?
I don't disagree with you, but what do you propose we do? This isn't a small nation like England where everyone is a short train ride to downtown London and with so many of us unemployed, who could afford to travel somewhere to march?
