The Fifth Sacred Thing by Starhawk being made into a film
Edited on Sun Jul-24-11 01:01 PM by G_j
If you enjoyed the book "The Fifth Sacred Thing" as much as I did, you might find this of interest.

About this project

They say that movies are collective dreams. If so, we’re heading for a nightmare—for there are very few films that show a positive future on earth. We want to change that. How can we create a thriving, just and balanced future if we can’t even imagine it? We want to bring alive a vision that can inspire people—and we’ve found the story in Starhawk’s novel, The Fifth Sacred Thing.

In the story, set in 2048, Northern California has survived eco-catastrophes, wars and epidemics and forged a society based on respect for the Four Sacred Things that support life: air, fire, water and earth. Streets are turned into gardens, streams flow free, people of all races and religions live in harmony – until the militarist Southlands attack. How can the people of a peaceful society fight against ruthless invaders without becoming what they’re fighting against? Musician-turned-guerilla Bird, his story-teller grandmother Maya, and Madrone, the healer, must wield a force more powerful than weapons—the fifth sacred thing.

In the eighteen years since its publication, hundreds of thousands of people have read The Fifth Sacred Thing and been moved by its imagery and drama. Now, at this time when our future seems so precarious, we want to bring it to the screen and to a whole new generation who are more visual than verbal. To do it right—big screen, special effects, major actors and director, will take lots of money. What we hope to raise here is just the beginning, but a very important one.

Making a movie of a book that so many people love is a scary venture. We feel a huge responsibility—first to be faithful to the book’s artistic vision, to make a film that moves people emotionally, that’s dramatic and funny and edge-of-the-seat powerful. But also, we want to be faithful to the values of earth-care and social justice the book represents. Not just in what the movie portrays, but also in the way we go about making it. We’ve written a Green Plan that will set new standards for environmental accountability in the film industry. We’ll bring resources into the inner city by networking with community organizations with whom we have longstanding relationships. We’ll put up a website with extensive resources and develop many ways that people who are inspired by the vision can learn the skills they need to create it and connect with others who share it. We want the movie to help nurture and support the movements that are already growing to put our world on a path of peace, justice and ecological harmony.

6. The book is great, with the potential to change your life, if only a bit.
It can be read without buying into Starhawk's Wiccan/pagan philosophical/
religious works, that is, it can be read as a work of speculative fiction and
it's still very enjoyable and meaningful; I highly recommend The Fifth Sacred
Thing
.

5. Cool.
She is amazing. I haven't read this book, but have met her several times at rituals we've had at protests. (Driving out evil spirits and all that).

I must read this now.

9. nothing like watching a spiral dance through
tear gas! They have some wonderful methods of deescalating potentially violent scenarios.

14. We came very close to doing just that.
It was years ago. We were in Sacramento for 5 days protesting a big GMO conference there. The Sacramento cops were really fucking mean. I don't know if they used any tear gas, gut it was very edgy, and they may have. They cordoned off hundreds of us right on the capitol grounds and wouldn't let anyone leave for quite some time.

We did do a ceremony with Starhawk that included a spiral dance in the streets one night we were there.

I also liked the book SpiritWalker...by hank wesselman (http://www.sharedwisdom.com/)

about an anthropologist who has spontaneous shamanic dream journeys and meets his own 'ancestor' from the future... 600 years in the future. what really stuck with me is the way he describes and sees the change in geography, and how something called a 'citi' is just a legend...

looking forward to THIS movie, for sure

13. I know I've never read this,
but the description was so familiar that I had to go browsing through my shelves to find what was tickling my brain.

I've read all of my books, but I read so many books, every year, that even books I really loved will be filed out of easy memory if I don't read them regularly, or haven't read them in a few years.

Sure enough, I found it: Always Coming Home, by Ursula Le Guin, published in 1986. There are enough similarities to intrigue me. I've put Starhawk's book on hold at the library, and will follow the making and airing of the movie with interest.

23. I got this note from Starhawk today: (free showing of Signs Out of Time)

Our Kickstarter http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/fifthsacredthing/the-fifth-sacred-thing campaign for The Fifth Sacred Thing is going phenomenally well. We are 80% toward our original funding goal—with 25 days left to go! Thanks to everyone who has been showing us such fantastic support!

Now, we’re shifting gears. Our campaign really has two goals—first, of course, to raise the money we need to move the film project to the next level. Last weekend we had some very successful meetings in L.A. with a few key people who are willing to be our advisors around film financing and navigating the creative edges of the industry. The good news—assuming our Kickstarter campaign succeeds, as we feel sure it will, we’ll have what we need to move on to the next phase—due to your wonderful support, and, if I can say it, our own hard work over quiet years of crafting the screenplay, the visuals, and many other pieces.

To convince a top-level director to join us, to draw in investors and financing, we need three things. The first is a great story—which hopefully we have. The second is money, which we will have at least some of. The third, however, is popular support. Investors today are looking for things that already have a following—novels, comic books, sequels to sequels—even more than big-name stars. Every Like on our Facebook page or sign-up to our mailing list helps. But what is most convincing: people who actually kick down some cold cash and show their support.

So—would you be willing to help us in this way? Go to our Kickstarter page and become an active backer, for even as little as dollar? http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/fifthsacredthing/the-fifth-sacred-thing
As I write, we have almost 800—we’d love to get over 1000. If everyone on this list gave even the price of a cup of coffee—hopefully organic, shade-grown and fair-traded, of course—we’d be in the top echelon of Kickstarter projects as far as numbers of active backers.

Thank you so much! And as a special treat, this coming week until August 15, our distributors will be live streaming Signs Out of Time, the documentary I made with director Donna Read on archaelogist Marija Gimbutas. Although I haven’t made a feature film yet, I have worked on a number of documentaries and Signs is dear to my heart, and a good introduction to the Goddess who is such a core figure in The Fifth Sacred Thing as well.

Here’s the information:
“Watch SIGNS OUT OF TIM <http://alivemindcinema.com/req.php?req=static.php&page=SignsoutofTimeFIP> E online for free when you become a member of the Alive Mind Cinema communit <http://alivemindcinema.com/req.php?req=plugins/Signup/signup.php> y. Join and after your registration is validated via e-mail, login to the site and go to the Members Screening Room. Select SIGNS OUT OF TIME from the pulldown menu and enjoy.
“Signs Out of Time, a film by Donna Read and Starhawk, examines the life and work of world-renowned archaeologist Dr. Marija Gimbutas. Drawing from her extensive knowledge of mythology and linguistics, Lithuanian-born Gimbutas uncovered the life-affirming and goddess-worshiping civilizations of pre-historic “Old Europe.” Weaving together footage of Gimbutas herself, as well as interviews with her supporters and critics, Signs Out of Time reveals a visionary scholar whose theories challenged the “establishment” of her time and influenced a generation of scholars, feminists, and social thinkers.”

Thanks so very much! Your support has been a great gift already!
Blessings, Starhawk
