Anwar Al-Awlaki provided money and lodging on the West Coast for the Flt. 77 hijackers after their arrival in 2000 and then followed them as their "spiritual advisor" to Northern VA. He also dined at the Pentagon just months after 9/11 while listed as Al Qaeda’s #3. He was taken into custody but the US released him and allowed to exit the US. Al-Awlaki has since been linked to the the "Underwear Bomber," Maj. Hassan (the "Fort Hood Shooter"), the "Times Square Bomber", and Richard Reid, (the "Shoe Bomber" who used the same explosive type), as well as the recent Yemeni parcel bombs.
