Has anyone ever seen the graphic portraying the left and the right?
I remember seeing it somewhere and it was a curve and the ends of the curve met. This was a graphic made by trained sociologists that basically suggested that if you go far right enough, you meet the far left or vice versa. The graphic also has notations such as conservative, neocon, liberal, etc...

Ring any bells?

14. No they were both totalitarians...
and as such their only political allegiance was to total power.

10. However the wheel they
refer to is, I think, the one you are thinking about. The way they interpret it is wrong. I can't find the original - I thought I had a paper copy - but the broken circle concept is that anarchy and true communism (as Marx envisioned) are actually very similar in execution.

8. that doesn't say right meets left
I remember the right meeting left discussions in conjunction with the french revolution from history classes at school. Which of course is the classic example. The kings were tyrants but the revolutionaries were too.

6. Interesting conjecture because marxism and fascism had the same philosophical roots. Both tout
supremacy of the state over individual rights and freedoms.

Hitler and Stalin had similar goals "state control" so it's understandable that the fringes might coalesce.

12. I've seen it, but I always thought that a better interpretation was that, if you
go far enough in either direction, you run into a degree of bugfuck nuttery that defies classification. But simply saying they're the same seems to obscure important details about an individual's path and evolution in getting to that position.

I think the two-dimensional model (left-right, authoritarian-libertarian) like in the Political Compass is more informative...
