This is interesting... its possible a misspelling of Loughner's name led to the shooting
Edited on Sun Jan-09-11 08:42 PM by Very_Boring_Name
According to Gawker, police executed a search warrant and found a letter locked in Loughner's safe from Giffords office thanking him for attending a Giffords event back in 2007. However, his name was spelled by Giffords office as "Loughney". As one of the commenters on the Gawker page pointed out, he had a psychotic obsession with grammar and frequently cited the literacy rate in Giffords district as a complaint. Police also found evidence that he began planning the assassination back in 2007, so obviously something triggered it at that time. And why would he lock the letter up in a safe unless it had some sort of significance?

Here's the gawker article: http://gawker.com/5729078/was-the-arizona-shooting-the-product-of-a-two+year+old-grudge

edit: fixed my own misspellings lol

4. In all his ramblings he was obsessed about language, words, and grammar.
Just would be horribly tragic if that is what tipped his delusional mind over the line.

10. Given the multiple misspellings we've seen in the media in the past 24 hrs...
I would be surprised if the 2007 letter was the first time his name was misspelled by someone. It does not appear he was planning to assassinate other people. If he was particularly offended that the misspelling came from a politician, that still puts a political spin on this, IMO. And there's still the matter of the question he had for Giffords and the answer he was reportedly unhappy with.

12. Why would he lock the letter in a safe?
By the way, they also found written on the envelope of the letter "I planned ahead the assassination" with his name signed. Something about that letter caused him to snap.

15. Why did it matter so much that she misspelled his name?
When others surely have in the past without his planning to assassinate them?

That is my question.

16. A couple of things
First of all it mattered that she misspelled his name, because as we've seen, he was absolutely obsessed with the grammar and spelling of other people. You can see it in all of his youtube videos and writings. While others may have misspelled his name in the past, Giffords appeared to be the person he blamed for this because he frequently cited the literacy rate of her district (he claimed it was 5%). So he obviously thought that she wasn't doing enough to improve the grammar of her constituents. It's really really odd no matter how you look at it (especially considering his grammar was some of the worst I've ever seen).

17. Well they found the letter from 2007 in the safe
and on it he wrote "I planned ahead... the assassination." So he clearly "snapped" at that point though you're right in that we don't have any evidence that he actually started the shooting back then.

If someday I attack him with kisses will that prove I'd been planning it since 2002?

21. You're right
I just think that the fact that he kept the letter (which was just a generic thank you letter that 500 other people probably got too) locked in a safe of all places, and then chose to write those comments on it indicates that this shooting is connected to it.

If there is anything that points to his planning this from 2007 that would be Significant though.

33. I still have a letter from "Scoop" Jackson from 1976.
- Well, actually, my parents still have it with their papers. It thanked me for my letter asking him to vote to save the wild horses and preserve federal lands. His staff may have typed it, but at least he signed it.

Later, I found out how much of a right bastard he was. Though, he'd have eaten most of the current crop of republicans alive.

You can simply exchange letters.

30. How's his penmanship?
Any letter sent was probably done from a list of people who signed in at a meeting. The "r" is not next to the "y" on a qwerty keyboard...

Whatever. As if that matters, but it would be fitting in this madness if he was incensed by something for which he was partially or wholly responsible...
