9. Which is why this is being done. The R's obstruct like clockwork.
I'm sure this was discussed between POTUS, Reid and Pelosi last night.

The R's have been programmed for unilateral opposition to this President since he took office.

And it's now being used to show everyone that they're willing to drive the economy off a cliff rather than change their attitude.

16. Republicans are already saying it's going to be a no to Reid's plan.
Edited on Mon Jul-25-11 02:28 PM by Lone_Star_Dem
They didn't even wait for Obama to sign on this time.

GOP aides did express confidence that the Reid plan will not be able to get 60 votes in the Senate and that by the end of the week, the Boehner plan will be the only game in town.

As to Boehner's plan, they're not happy with it either.

Senior GOP aides also appeared nervous about selling the Boehner plan to the GOP caucus and deferred any question about whether they can get 218 GOP votes in the House for it.

In a sign of possible trouble, Heritage Action, a conservative group, immediately pooh-poohed the plan.

"Based on preliminary reports, we are skeptical this proposal rises to the occasion," Heritage Action’s CEO Michael Needham said.

36. See my reply #3.
Right on the money (again).

If the President doesn't invoke the 14th (ASAP), or caves to the hostage takeR$ plan, the world's greatest depression ever will begin (I'm afraid to be right on the money, again).

So that leaves no other solution than the 14th (and I am happy to be right on the money, again).

That would be postponing the theft of Medicare and SS, while adding a mechanism that will eliminate our ability to defend ourselves from future assaults.

And here's the thing they wanted most. They now get to run anti Obama ads for the next year and a half portraying Obama as the guy who destroyed Social Security and Medicare.

And Mr 12 Dimensional Chess has played right into their hands.

6. MSNBC was discussing that Reid plan is DOA in senate bc GOP will oppose as a block. This
will then leave the Boehner plan as the last plan standing, having passed the GOP-controlled house, which will force Obama to either acquiesce and fold on his promise to veto any short-term bill, or to start over at the last minute which would likely cause default.

GOP seems to have really spun this one around on us.

There's still the 14th amendment option, but I've heard so many opposing views on this that I'm not close to certain that it's even a viable option.

13. Interesting - I wonder what will eventually transpire - if anything. At this
point I hold almost zero hope that they'll reach an agreement, and like you, I've heard conflicting reports about the 14th. The legal "experts" can't even agree if it's do-able or not.

What a mess!

17. Epic shit show. I don't see any other options than the Boehner plan or the 14th. I'm sure if Obama
goes the way of the 14th, the GOP will scream treason and begin impeachment immediately. I wish there was a more clear consensus on the legality of it as a means to resolving this mess.

so that would keep it "off the table" until after the election. Frankly, I'm okay w/that since they're not messing with SS/Med/Med, and it seems it's the ONLY plan that leaves them alone!

SO confusing!! :eyes:

48. I think this is what will utimately be used to trigger the use of the 14th amendment
Obama is not usurping the Congress' power, he is, at the last minute, following his own oath of office rather than allow the country to suffer a huge catastrophe. In an odd way, Obama is almost in a domestic/economic version of CIC here. - and yes, I know I am treading on very very thin ice. If Obama signals Democrats he has a solution if they do not accept the Republican ransom demands, Obama will be in this incredibly scary position.

However, the alternative is scarier. The Republicans will continue to "take hostages" for every single must pass bill. With one House, with a smaller majority than we had 2 years ago - when we also had the Presidency and the Senate, they will completely take over the government. No one voted them this power. It may take drastic action to show them it doesn't work. This is bolder than Obama has typically been, but he has a case to explain his actions to teh American people.

Let's hope he read "If you give a mouse a cookie ...." to Sasha and Malia. Let's see "If you give the Republicans billions of spending cuts", he will probably ask for changes in Medicare. Then he will look to take more money out of social security. Then he might want ask that capital gains not be taxed. (For those who did not read this to kids or who were not the kids it was read to - http://www.amazon.com/You-Give-Mouse-Cookie-Give/dp/0060245867#reader_0060245867 )

46. No - the Boehner plan would have to pass the Senate - and no way does it get 60 votes
The idea that because it passed one House it is the last plan "standing" is not true.

The reason the 14th amendment might be used is that it is becoming obvious that NOTHING can pass both Houses.
