URGENT: Proposed House Bill to gut 70 year-old worker protections (without public input or a hearing

We need your voice as a person of faith -- quickly. The US House of Representatives is preparing to vote on a bill that will gut 70 year-old worker protections for all workers, putting American families at risk.

Help us stop this bill from becoming law: http://salsa.democracyinaction.org/o/1035/p/dia/action/public/?action_KEY=7421

Rep. John Kline has written a bill (HR 2587) that would allow companies to retaliate against workers for exercising their right to organize and engage in collective activity by threatening to move jobs or actually moving them! This bill was rammed through the House Education and Workforce Committee without public input or a hearing, with less than 48 hours notice. And a House floor vote on HR 2587 will likely be scheduled for this Wednesday. This bill isn't about creating jobs or fixing the deficit. It is, pure and simple, an unprecedented full-throttle attack on American workers.

Please write to your Representative in Congress right now and tell him/her to vote "no" on HR 2587.

The religious community supports workers' rights to engage in collective bargaining and all major faith traditions have policy statements affirming workers' rights to organize. It's important that our leaders in Washington hear the voices of people of faith on this issue. Let them hear yours.

Thanks for your support,

Kim Bobo

STOP HR 2587!
Protect workers' right to engage in collective activity.

2. This is confusing to me. Perhaps I am not seeing it clearly.
Exactly how will this affect 70 year olds? Oops, just realized what you meant. Did you invent that op title, or did you copy it. Of course, my misunderstanding of the title of your post could be due to the fact that I am soon going to be 70 years of age. Oh, well, left my brain somewhere today.

9. Waiting for the "damned if you do, damned if you don't" crowd to weigh in
Seems there's no shortage of outrage at DU on whether it's persons of faith not advocating enough, or advocating too much. Call it the Goldilocks Paradox: never just right. I know! They should tell working people to go hang, and that'll teach those goddam Christians they won't be bullied by ancient fairy tales and invisible sky wizards.

It takes an uncommon mind to think these things through and arrive at the proper conclusion.

11. Interesting that you felt compelled to inject that here.
In the Bible, the teacher Jesus commands his followers to rejoice and to celebrate if mocked or persecuted for their faith in him. Yet here on DU, folks can not even wait to hear an offense, they rush in to type the one they expect, then rail against it. No rejoicing is ever seen, no celebration either. I always wonder how that works, these sayings of the teacher and the emotional needs of the students.

13. I think they want to slip this under the radar while everyone is watching the debt
ceiling debate.

This bill is to add language to further weaken the National Labor Relations Board.

12. Why do 70-year-old workers need protection?
JK!

But that's the way I understood the subject line the first two times I read it.
