It would be fabulously fun.

2. "In a hole in the ground there lived a hobbit. ...
... Not a nasty, dirty, wet hole, filled with the ends of worms and an oozy smell, nor yet a dry, bare, sandy hole with nothing in it to sit down on or to eat: it was a hobbit-hole, and that means comfort."

8. It's a little too gooey and organic for my taste
but I can see houses made with something like http://www.lightconcrete.com/ with the sod and grass or other plantings on top. Those would tend to hold up better than sod on top of plastic sheeting and the interiors would be a little less hospitable to bugs. Fire resistance would also be a huge help.

Thank you for the heads-up, Skidmore. It is amazing what can be done with one's hands and what the earth provides.

13. Most may see this house design as retro but I see this as the future...
of a sustainable lifestyle, if we are smart enough to have one.

houses? Very lush and green just like the Shire.

22. Google 'Hobbit houses' to find more images/websites
There are some of these cottages in Culver City, CA, among other places. I nearly rented one of them decades ago. It was a bit cramped, but everything inside was beautifully hand-crafted.

25. I'd like to see some sort of structure that catches rainwater and snow
and funnels it into a deep well or container under the house. I'd also like to see skylights for a small indoor crops area.

You could actually make such structures quite large as you would be creating mounds, or digging into the ground. Why limit it to one dome. You could have more domes with more skylights with more snow and water gathering structures.

And it could all look just as cute.

It is very appealing as it is though. But why limit it to homes. How about making schools that look like that and if it was a village then make the courthouse look like that, only bigger.

I like the idea. From the outside it would look a lot like a minimum invasion on the countryside and yet on the inside it would be quite a town.
