Fukushima to provide life-time cancer checks (JAPAN)

Children in disaster-affected Kawamata, Fukushima Prefecture, hold dosemeters on June 21. (Kengo Hiyoshi)

Fukushima Prefecture on July 24 finalized the nation's largest life-time health study to check for thyroid-gland cancer among 360,000 young people living near the Fukushima No. 1 nuclear power plant.

Under the program, residents under 19 as of April 1 will undergo ultrasonic exams from October 2011 to March 2014 to check for symptoms of thyroid-gland cancer.

They will then take the same exam every two years.

For residents over 19, the exams will be performed every five years free of charge.

1. They probably figure they won't last too long since they've given these people a slow death anyway.

2. I can understand your cynicism, but
I have done a lot of translations of guidebooks of Japanese municipalities, and without exception, all of those municipalities have been proud of the cradle-to-grave health services that they provide their residents. Health care services are part of the social contract in Japan.

4. Uh, no. Most people there haven't even seen enough radiation to have a substantial cancer increase.
Science is science to everyone.
