If Obama had any stones at this point
He'd walk away from the talks for good and let the 'pugs get nailed for the shutdown. There's nothing to be gained from even trying to reason with them.

It's not as if anything progressive could be done in the future if he caves in on the spending and everything else(cuts don't ever get restored) and it's not as if there's much in the status quo that's really worth committing the country to a permanent right-wing government just to save.

Why compromise with the relentlessly evil?

Just let THEM own this.

1. Yes, we should adopt the Repubs own cavalier attitude of letting the world burn.
Because hey, fuck the tens of millions of people whose lives it will ruin! :sarcasm:

3. Their lives will be ruined by the permanent conservatism his proposals will set up, too.
Obama isn't fighting for higher taxes for the rich.

It's worthless to struggle for "not as bad". Nothing positive ever comes from that.

5. That bubble you live in... what are the mortgage payments like?
Since you apparently missed the LIVE, PRIME TIME SPEECH tonight where he argued for higher taxes on the rich...

Either that, or you're just bullshitting.

8. You want to talk about bullshit? That, right there, is pure unmitigated bullshit.
Because you, and you alone, can apparently discern by magical fucking mental powers what the President is and is not "serious" about? You're either bullshitting or rationalizing so hard I'm shocked you don't have a hernia.

9. And he was still willing to accept massive and irreperable cuts in social spending
We can never recover as a country from those cuts and they'll never be restored.

10. Moooooove those goalposts!
I take it you mean the ~3% cuts in Medicare, Medicaid, and Social Security, the ones which he was very clear would not affect recipients? That's going to destroy America? Not to mention the fact that "they'll never be restored" is simply your personal assumption, about as accurate as the telepathy that says the President didn't really MEAN it about raising taxes on the rich.

Seriously, you're going farther over the edge with each justification.

4. They'd lay it on him no matter what. Why bother appeasing them?
Obama has nothing to gain by continuing to try for a "deal". Getting such a deal means guaranteeing that the government can't ever do anything progressive in the future.

We don't need a Democratic president cooperating in the death of the New Deal. And no progressive gains can come in the future if the New Deal is killed this year with Democratic support.

We're doomed if we reduce this party to the party of "slightly smaller cuts".

6. No matter what they'll blame this on Obama and democrats in general.
We already know he'll cave just to get something done so we might as well prepare for the inevitable.
