Glenn Beck: Norway camp smacks of 'Hitler Youth'

In the wake of last week's massacre in Norway, U.S. conservative commentator Glenn Beck on Monday compared the summer camp where most of the 76 victims died to the Hitler Youth organization of Nazi Germany.

Beck said the camp "sounds a little like, you know, the Hitler Youth or whatever. Who does a camp for kids that's all about politics? Disturbing."

However, politically-oriented camps are being organized in several U.S. states by chapters of the "9/12 Project" -- an organization founded by Beck himself in 2009.

The Colorado 9/12 Project hosted a "Patriot Camp" for kids in grades 1-5 earlier this month, featuring programs on "our Constitution, the Founding Fathers, and the values and principles that are the cornerstones of our nation."

Not only are there truly questionable "political camps" in this country but Beck does not understand the context of these youth camps in Scandinavia.

Political parties have played a much more significant role in people's lives in Scandinavia than here. Political parties have organized and helped fund these types of camps for decades. While there certainly is a political element to them, these camps are as much about getting away to nature and having fun as anything.

I went to one that was held in Sweden when I was there as an exchange student a number of years ago. I saw nothing untoward about it and certainly nothing akin to the Nazi youth camps.

Youth organizations run by religious & political groups have existed among Northern Europeans for generations. The basic structure & purpose of the Hitler Jugend was modeled on pre-existing, long-established German & other European youth groups. It wasn't thought up by the Nazis out of thin air. When the Nazis consolidated power they simply banned all other youth groups and then absorbed compulsarily all the members into the HJ.

A little historical knowledge never hurt anyone. Before one comments about such things it's good to know what one is talking about. That applies to Glenn Beck as well as DU'ers.

getting a group of kids together to have fun and discuss ideas their parents think are important does not make them similar to NAZIS. Your analogy begs the question. Nazi s wore shirts, I wear a shirt. therefore i am a nazi? no. i know you mean well but your logical construct is just a flawed as that.
