5. If they accepted blame, |
|
then people might ask that they stop doing it. Then, Republicans would have to make actual arguments for what they want to do and that would be disastrous for them.

8. And do you know why the violence will NOT stop? |
|
Because to us they are "Repukes" instead of "Republicans". They are evil demons instead of the loyal opposition. How can we expect THEM to start behaving civilly unless we do the same?
We need to hold them to a higher standard, AND we need to hold ourselves to a higher standard. But we don't because we have righteous indignation going for us because we are so sure we're right. Just like they are so sure that they are right.
This has the potential to turn the USA into the Middle East with factions that hate each other and daily commit violence against each other, for generation after generation. Do you really want to live in a place like that? Do you want your children and grandchildren to live in a world with that kind of violence? If you do then keep up the hateful rhetoric and your wish will be granted. You cannot fight violence with violence.
From what I've seen this will NOT end, but will spiral out of control because neither side has the guts and the decency to stand down and return to an attitude of mutual respect. I see it at FR and I see it here. I'm very much afraid that our destiny is cast in stone and it is a destiny of increasing senseless violence and instability until the Union itself is torn apart. I hope I'm wrong, but from what I've read here over the last few days I don't think I am.
Now I will stand aside so the hatemongers can flame me.

12. No, see, there's a difference between calling someone an asshole and saying "I know where you live." |
|
There's a difference between saying "I will work against this person's election" and "I think we need a revolution." This isn't about civility; your tone-policing isn't helpful or needed. This is about the fact that there is a political movement in this country that has full-on accepted that real, actual, physical violence is an acceptable way to do politics.

maybe, just maybe, take some goddamn responsibility for their actions is absolutely nothing like holding an irrational prejudice against a religious or ethnic group.

18. We are not their excuse. |
|
They don't have one. The idea that if we're nicer to them, they will stop the violence is nonsense. They aren't shooting people because we hate them; they are shooting people because of their own hate. This isn't about what we feel and how we express it; it's about how they feel and how they express it.
There is a BIG difference between the two, and they're unrelated.
In other words... this isn't happening because some RWers got their little feelings hurt by us. They couldn't care less what we think anyway. Such arguments by them are just the standard transference/blame-shifting they always do.
That "black is white" doublthink is the real poison btw. It's irrational, and it spreads irrationality. No surprise there. The RWers have built irrationality into an entire delusional philosophy now. And as we see - it kills. The last thing we should do is reinforce the doublethink by giving it credibility. On the contrary, we need to give it no validation and never reward it by catering to it. Joining in with them in blaming ourselves for their actions is rewarding it. If we want to see more of the same continue, that's a good way to do it. Most of us aren't on that page.

20. I've watched Dem's back over themselves today trying to appease the RW. |
|
The first thing the RW did was say how sorry they were. They wanted it to be a lunatic, say it wasn't them.
As more came out, because it was obvious that Gifford had Tea Party enemies, they accused the Dem's of being political.
Then they went back on the attack and said Gifford had it coming. The next things I read said for Dem's to expect more of the same.
I understand civility. They see it as weakness and get more aggressive and not less, which is a typical abuser technique when the victim says no.
And they are actually playing the victim now from being accused, another abuser technique.
The most civil Dem's have been the most maligned by the RW. The less civil are attacked by other Dem's.
Sometimes I worry that we've been so battered that we don't know who we are anymore and are just hoping the next blow won't hurt as much as the last.
We are getting abused from the RW and those that should show solidarity with us are not standing up and calling this what it is.
Seriously, this is getting old! .

23. That's not quite what I said. Close, but not quite... |
|
You said: "The idea that if we're nicer to them, they will stop the violence is nonsense." and I agree.
What I meant is that one of these possibilities will be the case:
1. If we are nice them and they are nice to us then we will have a civil society. 2. If we are disrespectful to them and they are disrespectful to us then we will have an uncivil society, and it will be the fault of both sides. 3. If we are nice to them and they are disrespectful to us then the fault lies entirely with them.
So the question I'm asking is should the Democrats share the blame? Or should the Democrats continue to be respectful to their opponents leaving the Republicans to shoulder ALL the blame? Because when the people have finally had enough of this crap and put a stop to it will it be BOTH sides that get blamed, or just the Republicans? If WE always treat the other side with respect then all the blame will ultimately fall on them, and none on us.
So as long as we use insulting words like "Repuke" and "Rush Limpballs" we are, in effect, telling the world that we too want to play in the mud; that we too want a share of the blame.
