‘We Get The Sacrifice, They Get The Wealth’: A Fired-Up Pelosi Tears Into GOP Deficit Plan

A little taste of what she was saying.

Speaking to a crowd of union workers on Capitol Hill today, House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi unloaded on Republican plans to lower the deficit through deep cuts to government services in exchange for raising the debt ceiling. Frustrations are running high in Congress with the default deadline rapidly approaching, and Pelosi spoke with a fire that suggested the endless debate over the debt ceiling is taking its toll on her patience.

"This isn't just about them saying we should reduce the deficit," she said, adding: "This is an excuse. The budget deficit is an excuse for the Republicans to undermine government plain and simple. They don't just want to make cuts, they want to destroy. They want to destroy food safety, clean air, clean water, the department of education. They want to destroy your rights."

17. Real leader?
Pelosi is why we are in the current fiasco. She could not muster the leadership to get the debt limit increased prior to the 2010 election. She was so concerned that the Dems might lose seats if they voted for a large debt limit increase that would have covered us until 2012. She dodged the issue and only put forth a short term increase, lost the congress anyway, and here we are.

18. She has her problems but I see you forgot to add the Blue
Dogs into your comment, there were 300 bills stopped at the door of the Senate. Pelosi got those bills through the House.

21. Blue Dogs are traitors to the party...
But they are a small minority. Somehow the Republican leadership was able to get all their members (conservative and moderate) to vote party line.

20. Yeah, keep telling yourself that
If you look at the results and get passed the hyperbole, you'll see that she was one of the strongest house leaders we've had in a very long time.

Why don't your try focusing on directing your ire towards the GOP?

22. Puleeezzzee!
The debt limit has been increased 39 times since 1980 and has been a non-partisan issue. Reagan increased the debt ceiling 17 times. Yeah, it's all Nancy's fault. Give me a break.

23. What part do you not understand?
I'm not talking about the other times since they have no bearing on the current hostage situation the Republicans are holding us in. I'm talk specifically about the White House desire in 2010 to raise the debt ceiling limit high enough to make it past the 2012 election. Pelosi could not muster the leadership or get the votes to make that happen. She was concerned about losing Blue Dogs seats so she only raised it a smaller amount.

26. Excuse me?
So Pelosi is supposed to be all-knowing and all-seeing? Should have seen it coming - should have recognized that everything would be held hostage by the repukes - yeah, what the fuck is that woman's problem?

30. It does not take an omnipotent Leader...
It was obvious to most that this was going to happen. I recall pretty clearly at the time many people saying that this exact scenario would play out. It was suggested that they raise the limit from the 12.1 Trillion to a large number that would get us through 2012. Instead, fearful of losing the House, Pelosi increased is by a small amount.

Regardless, even if the normal schmoe didn't see this coming, if Pelosi is to earn the moniker of being a great leader, she should have anticipated it.

40. That is all correct.
Both Reid and Pelosi also punted on taxes, refused to take any potential political heat as 'tax-raisers' right before the mid-terms, hoped to nretain a majority, then went and dumped it all on Mr. Obama to deal with.

13. Both, of course.
Anyone who doesn't recognize a need for some austerity/savings is a fool, and Nancy sure isn't one of those. Dems mustn't saddle ourselves with 'all or nothing' meme, when life just isn't that way.

7. It's as plain as the nose on your face
I wonder why Democrats can't get together for this very simple message? Instead, we get mealy-mouthed platitudes on national teevee about bipartisanship and working together after seven months of thunder-dome style mayhem. "Republicans are undermining government, looking to destroy food safety, clean air, clean water and the department of education." Real simple and understandable.

Ooops! Destroying "the department of education"? I think I just figured out why the administration can't call out the Republican smashers for what they are. You don't betray your accomplices.

There is a tide in the affairs of men,
Which, taken at the flood, leads on to fortune;
Omitted, all the voyage of their life
Is bound in shallows and in miseries.
