Man attempts surgery on his hernia with butter knife, police say

from the LA Times:

Man attempts surgery on his hernia with butter knife, police say
July 26, 2011 | 7:08 am

A 63-year-old Glendale man was in stable condition after he attempted surgery on himself with a six-inch butter knife to remove a protruding hernia from his stomach, police said Tuesday.

When police arrived at the man’s home on the 1000 block of Columbus Avenue on Sunday evening, they saw the man lying naked outside on a lounge chair with what appeared to be the handle of a knife protruding from his stomach, Sgt. Tom Lorenz of the Glendale Police Department told the Glendale News-Press.

As police waited for paramedics to arrive, Lorenz said the man pulled out the knife and shoved a cigarette he was smoking inside the open wound. ...............(more)

1. If health care was really affordable this man would probably not be doing this surgery on himself...

4. This situation has more to do with mental health than physical health -
- as this man was obviously very disturbed. For all we know he could have health insurance - the article doesn't state one way or the other. It does, however, state he was placed on psychiatric hold in the hospital.

6. I think this guy had even bigger problems than a lack of affordable health care.
What he probably really needed was affordable psychiatric care. You don't try to repair your own hernia in your front yard using a butter knife unless you have some serious mental problems.

3. This is indeed strange
I ran across this earlier today and read it aloud to my friend. It sounds even weirder if you read it straight-faced, kinda Jack Webb style.

Lordy, Lord...what people will do when they feel they have no other options.

Scary.

8. It was the insertion of the lit cigarette that has me squirming most.
