7. I actually think it might be nice if some reporter asked the Speaker on tape.
Would he cry? or simply ignore the question?

13. Exactly my initial reaction, but then...
I was thinking - If President is put in the position where he has to decide which checks to withhold, I hope he withholds Congress' checks first and cuts off their benefits. Now that would be funny!

15. I know, right? I was pissed when I heard that
It was in context of Anthony Weiner and whether he should resign. They said he would be able to draw from his pension in another 18 months.

The rest of us get to wait another dozen years.

:grr:

20. Their pensions should track with social security ages - and they
should all have to purchase their health insurance on the open market or as a group and not have health insurance as one of their benefits except to have x amount of dollars provided for it and they make up the difference. The x amount of dollars should track what employees get from their employers. Let them "eat" deductibles like the rest of us.

22. This is just pure horseshing - yes they can retire at 55, but they won't get over $10 a month
This utter nonsense about Congress getting some sort of great and special pensions and not paying into Social Security and being able to get some sort of full pension after just a term or two of service is not only pure horseshit but its also nothing less than a whole bunch of Democrats acting as the Loudspeaker for the Republican noise machine.

Every single bit of it is lies. Congress gets exactly the same retirement benefits and they are accrued exactly the same was as for every other Federal Employee. Your Congressman has the same retirement plan as the Clerk in your local Social Security Office, the same as the USDA meat inspector that graded your hamburger, the same as a researcher at the NIH.

Come on people, use your brains. If you see something that makes you hate Government or any part of it you might want to find out the truth before you start shouting the horseshit from the rooftops.

21. In case your are wondering here is what they get:
Senate Leadership
Majority Party Leader - $193,400
Minority Party Leader - $193,400

House Leadership
Speaker of the House - $223,500
Majority Leader - $193,400
Minority Leader - $193,400

A cost-of-living-adjustment (COLA) increase takes effect annually unless Congress votes to not accept it.

Benefits Paid to Members of Congress

You may have read that Members of Congress do not pay into Social Security. Well, that's a myth.

Prior to 1984, neither Members of Congress nor any other federal civil service employee paid Social Security taxes. Of course, they were also not eligible to receive Social Security benefits. Members of Congress and other federal employees were instead covered by a separate pension plan called the Civil Service Retirement System (CSRS). The 1983 amendments to the Social Security Act required federal employees first hired after 1983 to participate in Social Security. These amendments also required all Members of Congress to participate in Social Security as of January 1, 1984, regardless of when they first entered Congress. Because the CSRS was not designed to coordinate with Social Security, Congress directed the development of a new retirement plan for federal workers. The result was the Federal Employees' Retirement System Act of 1986.

Members of Congress receive retirement and health benefits under the same plans available to other federal employees. They become vested after five years of full participation.
