Morrissey Says Fast Food Is Worse Than Norway Massacre
Quaintly-racist Irish folk singer Morrissey is at it again. Unfortunately "it" is not "singing weepy ballads to sad sack college English majors." Morrissey compared the Norway massacre to fast food at a show.

Here's what Morrissey, a vegan and animal rights crusader, had to say before singing his classic "Meat is Murder" at a concert in Warsaw, Poland on Sunday:

"We all live in a murderous world, as the events in Norway have shown, with 97 dead (sic).

Though that is nothing compared to what happens in McDonald's and Kentucky Fried s—- every day."

What was going through Morrissey's foggy moor of a mind with this comment? Was he trying to make his audience so revolted by him that they would lose their appetite for delicious Wendy's Spicy Chicken sandwiches? If so, success.

Morrissey and Glenn Beck ought to do a tour together where they go around and shit on the victims of the latest heart-wrenching tragedy before the tears on their parents' faces even have a chance to dry. Shut up, Morrissey.

:Butt-head: This is really beginning to piss me off, Beavis.
:Beavis: Yeah, really!
:Butt-head: Get off the ground and stop whining, you wuss!
:Beavis: Get up! Get up, stand up straight, and quit acting like a wuss! Quit whining, go out and get a job and some good clothes!
:Butt-head: You tell him, Beavis!
:Beavis: Yeah, yeah, yeah! And another thing, stay away from those rocks!

You have to be pretty unbearable for a nice guy like Robert Smith to hate you.

And yes, I can't imagine Robert Smith hating anyone. Morrissey must be an uber-douche.

15. Smith also once said "Morrissey’s so depressing, if he doesn’t kill himself soon, I probably will"
Edited on Thu Jul-28-11 10:33 AM by phleshdef
and “The press tries to portray me as a gloom-and-doom-singer. But take a look at Morrissey! That man is a professional complainer!”

They had a feud going for awhile. Morrissey went off on the Cure in an interview back in the 80s and that started the whole thing. Robert Smith has verbally punched him in the face several times since.

21. At least the Cure is fun. Though some of the songs are a bit emo-ish for my tastes.
Robert Smith is a great and creative singer. Even when listening to the Cure songs I'm less fond of, I never feel like opening up a vein.

10. Morrissey on immigration:
"With the issue of immigration, it's very difficult because, although I don't have anything against people from other countries, the higher the influx into England the more the British identity disappears. If you walk through Knightsbridge on any bland day of the week you won't hear an English accent. You'll hear every accent under the sun apart from the British accent. England is a memory now. The gates are flooded and anybody can have access to England and join in."
A real lover of life he is....

Generally much more juvenile and less topical than the Onion, and very British type humor.

"fast-food kills." And many more people than the massacre.

In these times where it's harder and harder to get attention, or attention to your cause, we can expect more of this crass opportunism from attention whores. Celebrities can speak their minds...with a freedom we can only envy.

22. If your 'cause' needs attention SO BADLY that the only way to ...
...get it is comparing it with the mass murder of innocent people...

...maybe the problem is inherent in your Cause. Maybe it's not that people haven't heard it, it's that they've heard it and moved on to something a bit more sane. Seriously, pick you damn battles. Veganism isn't going to get adopted by a small fraction of the world's populace, let alone any large majority of it. PEOPLE HATE THAT SHIT, and screaming 'Fast Food Kills!!1!11!!1eleven!!' at the top of your lungs is only convincing them that indeed, you ~are~ batshit insane.

(Note: Use of the word 'you' is not directed at the poster, Marion's Ghost, but instead used in the generic sense.)

35. Disagree--the problem isn't The Cause itself
...it's the use of a terrible unspeakable tragedy to promote your Cause (especially so close in time).

"Fast Food Kills" -- this is true--it's a slow death in humans.

Too much fats, sugar, chemicals, dairy, etc in it, but fast food is not the biggest use of meat products. A lot of the stuff is mixed with highly processed soybean meal, which is not so good for you either. The main offender in pizzas is way too much cheese.

Anybody who thinks the meat industry is just fine & dandy should read Michael Pollan's "Omnivore's Dilemma"--it doesn't promote vegetarianism, but illustrates why you might question meat-eating from many different perspectives. The way we treat animals in this country IS an abomination (--I am not a vegetarian, just don't eat much meat or dairy).

Many Causes are not going to be adopted by the world, but this doesn't make them unworthy causes.

25. And.....meat is murder.
Remember that?

Meat Is Murder was more strident and political than its predecessor, including the pro-vegetarian title track (Morrissey forbade the rest of the group from being photographed eating meat), the light-hearted "Nowhere Fast" and the anti-corporal punishment "The Headmaster Ritual" and "Barbarism Begins at Home". Musically, the band had grown more adventurous, with Marr adding rockabilly riffs to "Rusholme Ruffians" and Rourke playing a funk bass on "Barbarism Begins at Home".

Morrissey also brought a political stance to many of his interviews, courting further controversy. Among his targets were the Thatcher administration, the monarchy, and Band Aid. Morrissey famously quipped of the last, "One can have great concern for the people of Ethiopia, but it's another thing to inflict daily torture on the people of England."

32. thanks for the memories
don't get me wrong--I know they were brilliant & whatever M says doesn't take that away. Also I am FINE with political art & music, no matter how strident. It's a positive place to put anger and frustration --these songs get people to think about stuff bigger than themselves, whether they agree or not. All for the better. But a statement about the Norway killings, linking it to your pet cause right now seems crass and insensitive (and he's all about sensitivity, right?) But rock stars do this...and I can separate it from their music & overall contribution. :) point taken

34. Morrisey has always been insentive.
He's an egomaniac and most of his statements through the years have been crass, without caring if he pisses people off. And I agree - I don't have to like him personally to love The Smiths and the music. :hi:

24. Irish Folk Singer??? That's funny.
And, I would say this comment isn't any different than comments he's made in the past; people told him to shut up then - when he was the front man for one of the best bands of its era - a band that was definitely not folksy.
