Riot breaks out on Hollywood Boulevard
Edited on Thu Jul-28-11 10:28 AM by Renew Deal
Source: MSNBC

An angry crowd threw rocks and set fires on Hollywood Boulevard and police in riot gear fired bean bags late Wednesday after people were turned away from an invitation-only party and screening of a movie about a popular rave festival.

The famous street was closed by police until they managed to stop the disturbance.

The screening of "Electric Daisy Carnival Experience" at Grauman's Chinese Theater was scheduled to coincide with a "block party" promoted by DJ Kaskade, a favorite among fans of electronic dance music or EDM, who encouraged his fans to join the festivities in a Tweet sent earlier in the day.

The Tweet read: Today@6pm in Hollywood @Mann's Chinese Theatre. ME+BIG SPEAKERS+MUSIC=BLOCK PARTY!!! RT!

Patrol cars vandalized
But when a crowd estimated at more than a thousand converged, the gathering near Hollywood and Highland turned violent, with some members of the crowd throwing rocks and bottles and vandalizing patrol cars, according to a spokesman with the Los Angeles Police Department.

23. Let the organizer get a permit and close the street first

Is it that hard?

This is about some guy who is out to make money and promote himself.

It's perfectly fine to have block parties, but you don't set up a private event and then tell everyone to show up.

And probably also have to get some kind of liability insurance and all that stuff that keeps you from making tons of money.

30. LOL. I read somewhere that many evolutionary biologists think that
the normal run for a species is about 100,000 years before extinction. I think homo sapiens is right at that cusp :)

I once heard a wise man say that Americans never react to a problem until it jumps up and bites them personally on the ass. Time has convinced me of the accuracy of his statement.

17. This "riot" says a lot a out America, our consumer culture, and the deification of celebrity
Americans will go to great lengths to prove they are not victims. They'll let DC fuck them over badly, they'll refuse to organize into unions and they'll elect the most evil bastards to the highest offices. All to prove they aren't victims.

But you can swear up and down all day that you aren't a victim, but if you are being victimized, you are in fact a victim. And victim's rage does not pass you over.

The rage wells up and comes out at all the wrong times: "celebrations" of sports victories, anger from sports losses, and now this.

America is the capital of misdirected aggression.

19. It seems like someone decided to have a mass event without telling anyone first

Yes, you can have an outdoor concert in the street if you coordinate to get the street closed and traffic controlled, etc.

This doesn't look like that.

It seems that someone decided it was okay to say, "Hey, let's have a party in the street" without telling anyone first.

So, instead of having access and safety under control, the police show up and there's a "riot" going on.

18. Key word in KTLA coverage: "Impromptu Event"

Do I correctly understand that this was tweeted as a "block party" without any advance organization etc.?

It doesn't matter who or what the music... if anyone just decides they are going to have a "block party" without appropriate planning, there is going to be a problem.

Hicks. hometown. Houston. Herbs. Because it has a fucking H!

Yep. I love my intelligent comedians. I'm sort of glad Bill isn't around today --I think his head would have exploded during Bush Jr's reign.

Cool. Be seein' you around the DU I guess.

36. I think Dubya would have put Hicks in prison at the first opportunity.
And Hicks' popularity would have gone up even further! }(

I'm the same with liking intelligent comedians. Eddie Izzard blew me away the first of his shows I ever saw (Dress to Kill.) Still, I found I couldn't stop watching "Richard Pryor: Live on the Sunset Strip" some months back. He's still hilarious!

As for the X, I've only ever had acid. So, I can relate to Hicks' accounts of being on acid, too ("The door is ajar. How can a door be a jar?!")
