The Milwaukee County Board Thursday approved extending health insurance benefits to same-sex or opposite-sex domestic partners of county workers.
The board voted 13-5 in favor of adding the benefit, over objections of some supervisors who had sought a delay to more closely examine potential costs. An estimate by County Board staff said the benefit would be used by about 50 county workers and cost about $742,000 a year. The benefit will kick in next year.
Supervisors voting in favor of the domestic partner benefit were Biddle, Gerry Broderick, Lynne De Bruin, Marina Dimitrijevic, Jason Haas, Nikiya Harris, Lee Holloway, Willie Johnson Jr., Patricia Jursik, Theo Lipscomb, Peggy Romo West, Johnny Thomas and John Weishan Jr.
Those voting no: Supervisors Mark Borkowski, Paul Cesarz, Joseph Rice, Sanfelippo and Jim "Luigi" Schmitt. Supervisor Michael Mayo Sr. briefly left the board room and did not vote.
A tiny bit of good news out of Wisconsin. FTR, one of those yes votes is the husband of a long-time DUer (he's a DUer, too) and someone I am proud to call a personal friend. :)
