Extreme Abortion Restrictions Become Law in NC

RALEIGH (July 28, 2011)- NARAL Pro-Choice North Carolina is outraged by the North Carolina Senate’s vote to override Governor Bev Perdue’s veto of H.B. 854, the so-called “Woman’s Right to Know” Act, a bill that undermines the doctor-patient relationship and interferes in a woman’s ability to make her own health-care decisions.

As a result of today’s action, women seeking abortion care will have to endure a 24-hour waiting period, undergo a mandatory ultrasound even if their doctors don’t recommend one, and listen to a script written by politicians containing medically inaccurate information. This legislation does not even grant exceptions in the cases of rape, incest, or fetal anomalies.

Carey Pope, executive director of NARAL Pro-Choice North Carolina said, “Today, politics won over women’s freedom and privacy in our state. A legislature that claims to support smaller government just opened the door to even more political interference in our personal, private medical decisions. We now look to 2012 as an opportunity to protect our champions of choice at the General Assembly and take our legislature back from the hypocritical anti-choice majority. We thank all of the legislators who spoke out against this egregious legislation, as well as the thousands of supporters across the state who called and wrote their legislators. Our work is far from over and we will continue to fight for reproductive choice and freedom in our state.”

Pope said that 83 percent of North Carolina counties do not have an abortion provider, so the mandated waiting period could make it even more difficult for many women to access abortion care. The law also disproportionately affects low-income women who may not have the time and resources it takes to wait 24 hours or pay for a medically-unnecessary ultrasound.

“North Carolinians do not need or want government involvement in their personal medical decisions,” Pope said. “H.B. 854 was never about educating women or helping them make the best decision for their needs. Indeed, it was about restricting access to abortion based on ideological views. This government intrusion will not go unnoticed and the people of North Carolina will not abide it come the next election.”
