ThinkProgress Vote Count: 25 House Republicans Publicly Oppose, Boren will vote No
Edited on Thu Jul-28-11 02:24 PM by cal04
http://thinkprogress.org/politics/2011/07/28/280945/thinkprogress-vote-count-23-house-republicans-publicly-oppose-boehner-plan/

Tonight at around 6 p.m., the House of Representatives will vote on the Boehner plan, which would create another debt ceiling crisis in less than six months and likely lead to a downgrade in U.S. credit. Boehner needs 217 votes to pass the plan. Without Democratic support, Boehner can only afford to have 23 Republicans vote against the bill.

The conventional wisdom in the media and in political circles is that Boehner will find the votes to pass the bill. Usually, legislative leaders are able to twist enough arms to get key priorities passed.

But a careful review of public statements by House Republicans to the media and phone calls to congressional offices by ThinkProgress reveals that 23 House Republicans have already expressed opposition to the Boehner plan. Here’s the list:

1. Todd Akin (R-MO)
2. Justin Amash (R-MI)
3. Michele Bachmann (R-MN)
4. Paul Broun (R-GA)
5. Jason Chaffetz (R-UT)
6. Jeff Duncan (R-SC)
7. Jeff Flake (R-AZ)
8. Chuck Fleischmann (R-TN)
9. Trent Franks (R-AZ)
10. Phil Gingrey (R-GA)
11. Louis Gohmert (R-TX)
12. Trey Gowdy (R-SC)
13. Tom Graves (R-GA)
14. Andy Harris (R-MD)
15. Tim Huelskamp (R-KS)
16. Steve King (R-IA)
17. Jim Jordan (R-OH)
18. Jeff Landry (R-LA)
19. Connie Mack (R-FL)
20. Mick Mulvaney (R-SC)
21. Ron Paul (R-TX)
22. Dennis Ross (R-FL)
23. Steve Southerland (R-FL)
24. Joe Walsh (R-IL)
25. Joe Wilson (R-SC)

Update
Dan Boren (D-OK), a Democratic House member who voted for Cut, Cap and Balance, will vote no on the Boehner plan. ThinkProgress confirmed his position with his office.

The Hill is also reporting that Rep. Raul Labrador (R-ID) is also leaning no on the Boehner plan.

side.

A that point either the 14th or a clean bill seem the only two options.

6. Yes, it would be a serious hit to Boehner's credibility, and the Senate Dems
have unanimously (including Lieberman and Independent Sanders) said they're voting "No".

What's unknown is whether the Tea Party will band together in general GOP solidarity, or whether they'll take this opportunity to stick it to Boehner, whom they don't want as Speaker.

Either way, Boehner's bill won't get past the Senate. At that point, it will be either pass Reid's bill or do a clean debt limit increase as they SHOULD have done in the first place.

But the Congressional Black Caucus is also putting the pressure on, saying that they'll only support a clean debt limit.
