US, N.Korea begin talks in NY

The United States and North Korea began two-day talks in New York on Thursday to explore ways to resume the stalled six-party talks to denuclearize North Korea.

The meeting was held at the office of the US representatives to the UN and is first US-North Korean dialogue since December, 2009. US special representative for North Korean issues, Stephen Bosworth, greeted North Korean first vice foreign minister Kim Kye Gwan at the meeting.

To resume the six-party denuclearization talks, dormant for 2-and-a-half years, relevant countries agreed that North and South Korea should negotiate prior to a US-North Korean meeting and the two Koreas were able to hold talks last week.

Would any country unilaterally denuclearize? Would the USA do that?

1. Being a negotiator in these talks must
be one of the most depressing jobs on Earth. You know going in that nothing positive is ever going to amount from the ton of work you do.

I don't think North Korea will denuclearize, actually I don't think North Korea will ever do anything that could possibly benefit anyone except the current power structure in North Korea.

2. Probably not as depressing of a job as one might think
Go in with low expectations. Good food, drinks and service. Short work day. Air conditioned. Comfortable chairs. NY nightlife.

I wouldn't mind giving it a try.

3. Nuclear weapons make a country "important". Political leaders like that.
Kim is smart enough to know that without nuclear weapons he would just be a dictator of an abysmally poor and starving population and no one would listen to a word he had to say.

BTW, I think it was Kazakstan, but I'm pretty sure that one of the former USSR countries unilaterally denuclearized.

4. They have to do something for money. Threats are the one export that can't be embargoed.
