Dr. LeRoy Carhart is so controversial that even news stories about the Nebraska physician become controversial in themselves.

Carhart has become nationally known among those who follow the abortion issue. He is one of only a few doctors who perform late-term abortions.

He now commutes from Nebraska several times each week to do his work in Germantown, Maryland.

The Washington Post just published a 40-paragraph interview with Carhart.

The story literally generated stories about itself. Antiabortion forces chided the WP, to put it mildly, for the tone and content of the piece.

As the Post described the piece:

In a wide-ranging interview last week — his first extensive comments since he began traveling to Maryland in December — Carhart, 69, discussed his work, his plans to broaden health-care and social services to include adoption counseling, and security measures that he and his staff members take.
