Boehner's debt limit vote..... DELAYED!
Edited on Thu Jul-28-11 04:36 PM by aaaaaa5a

Is this the potential end of his speakership?

From TPM

THIS IS HUGE

The House vote on Speaker Boehner's plan scheduled for tonight has been postponed indefinitely. Read: He didn't have the votes to pass it.
Late word from Cantor's office is that they will still try for a vote this evening, possibly around 7 p.m. ET. But clearly they're buying more time to whip up a few more votes to make sure they can pass it

2. Can you imagine what is being promised to some of those tea party holdouts?
Some of those cretins are going to be living large when this is over...

17. How did Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) get to be Whip? My first reaction to seeing him staning
with Boehner and Cantor on TV last week was--Kevin WHO?

Evidently, many of his Republican colleagues have had the same reaction this week!

So 7pm? My stomach is in a knot, I can only imagine how they're all feeling back there!!

10. This ONCE AND FOR ALL

shows how difficult dealing with the Tea Party really is. Obama can't strike a deal with them. And apparently, neither can the Republicans!

Think about it. If Boehner can't get a GOP plan through Congress, how is a bi-partisan bill suppose to get through?

Obama has been dealt some of the toughest playing cards in American history. PERIOD.

11. Tide turning against House GOP, which delays debt ceiling vote
<snip>

"House Republican leaders are desperately looking for the votes to pass Speaker John Boehner's (R-Ohio) debt-limit bill and have delayed a vote that had been expected for around 6 p.m.

Laena Fallon, a spokeswoman for Cantor, said the vote would occur "a little bit later" than the original 6 p.m. slot.

"The measure will still be voted on tonight," she added.

Boehner and his lieutenants have publicly expressed confidence they will carry the day, but their actions clearly show that they are still rounding up support. Boehner on Thursday afternoon was seen lobbying members, seeking yes votes in what is the biggest vote of his Speakership."

13. If Cantor says it will pass, it will. He is the chief teabagger. Boehner is not done - it
is said a lot here that the republicans are done, or he is done, and they keep coming back like a multi headed snake.

14. If he can't hold them together for this one meaningless vote, I'd say yes -
It's the end of him, or at least the beginning of it.

15. There's a little trick they play on freshmen legislators in Oregon
Often a newbie in the majority delegation will be handed the sponsorship of some bit of legislation that's sure to pass. It's a "welcome to the lege, kid" moment, and provides the newbie with something to brag about back home. When the bill comes up for a vote, EVERYONE votes no. The newbie, so proud and confident a moment ago, visibly wilts as his prize is about to go down to ignominious defeat. Just as the Speaker is about to gavel the vote closed, one of the legislators rises and asks to change his vote from Nay to Aye. This opens the floodgates as one by one the other members change their votes, and the bill passes.

Of course, with Boehner wielding the gavel, he'd close the vote as soon as he thought he had enough votes, so it wouldn't work, but damn it would be funny to see him gape in disbelief before having his hopes dashed into a kajillion pieces.

19. Boner sold his soul and the House to the Teabaggers
He may not agree with all of their demands, but has not managed them to defect them from going off the rails.

I would feel almost sorry for him -- BUT -- I just can't. He had a chance to derail Cantor -- didn't take it.

Out of his depth, never has been asked to be a real national leader before and has blown it in the face of true insanity.

20. The funny thing is

I would argue, that what Boehner is going through now would be no different than if he had excepted the grand bargain offered by the President. In fact the grand bargain might have gone through EASIER because it would have had at least "some" Democratic support.

The chickens are coming home to roost.

21. I suspect (and hope) a finely calculated "offer" from the Press.
knowing that Boner would blow it.

Obama is the ultimate poker face and player in brink situations.

We all will suffer from the aftereffects of the Bush regime and the measures taken to avoid a true and lasting Depression. The question is who and how much at this point.

Obama can use the 14th at the very last minute -- and Boner knows it and I think despairs at the inevitable rancorous outcome of that with "his" House.
