Hot Coffee – HBO’s Must-See Documentary About Tort Reform
Posted on July 24, 2011 by fl litig8r

You probably think you know everything you need to know about the “McDonald’s Hot Coffee” lawsuit. An old lady buys coffee at a McDonald’s drive thru, puts the cup between her legs, and spills the coffee in her lap while driving away. She then sues McDonald’s and gets millions of dollars. You’d be wrong. The HBO documentary Hot Coffee does an admirable job of describing the true facts of this case and how the tort reform lobby distorted them to trick people into supporting legislation which gives away some of their most valuable rights and protections. It also sheds light on other, less well known efforts to deprive you of your right to seek redress before the only branch of government (the judiciary) where you stand on equal footing with those who are richer and more powerful than you. These efforts include such things as damages caps, arbitration clauses and unscrupulous attempts to stack state supreme courts with anti-plaintiff judges.

1. And I thought it would be an expose on Starbucks!
This does sound worth watching, although I will have to wait until it makes it somewhere besides HBO to see it.

Thanks for the heads up.

2. I saw HOT COFFEE...
Edited on Thu Jul-28-11 07:59 PM by CoffeeCat
...a few weeks ago, I am still haunted by it.

You think you understand just how well the corporations are brainwashing us. You
don't fully understand until you sit down and watch HOT COFFEE. We are being "worked on"
nearly 24/7. Dark forces are at work in this country--and they're attempting to impede
everyday citizens from taking legitimate action against big, greedy companies.

As the movie details--they've bought the legislative branch, they've bought the executive
branch. However, they can't as easily buy the judicial branch. Corporations can't buy jurors. However,
they are working it from other angles. They wanted tort reform--which would limit the amount
citizens can obtain in civil suits against companies that wronged someone. They got tort
reform, and now juries have their hands tied when a company is at fault and someone is disfigured
for life.

There is also a segment on a Karl-Rove sponsored program in which fair judges who don't side
with the corporations 100 percent--are ousted with dirty campaigns. What happens to one fair-minded
judge is absolutely mind blowing. These bastards are buying many of these elections--attempting
to get Federal benches stacked with pro-corporate bastards who hate "We The People". It really
is sick.

See this movie. It will blow your mind.

6. saw it about a month ago.
One thought I had was that if the average American watched this, they would never believe any of it.
Until something happens to them, that is.
HBO has been doing some excellent documentaries.
