Conservatives angry over Pell Grant funding in Boehner debt bill
<snip>

"House conservatives who have stalled legislation to raise the national debt limit are angry that it includes $17 billion in supplemental spending for Pell Grants, which some compare to welfare.

Legislation crafted by House Speaker John Boehner (R-Ohio) to raise the debt limit by $900 billion would directly appropriate $9 billion for Pell Grants in 2012 and another $8 billion in 2013.

This has shocked some conservative House freshmen who say they were elected to cut spending, not increase it. Some House Republicans think of it as being akin to welfare."

<snip>

"The inclusion of the extra money for Pell Grants could cost Republican votes.

Rep. Denny Rehberg (R-Mont.) has compared Pell Grants to “welfare”.

"So you can go to college on Pell Grants — maybe I should not be telling anybody this because it’s turning out to be the welfare of the 21st century," Rehberg told Blog Talk Radio in April. "You can go to school, collect your Pell Grants, get food stamps, low-income energy assistance, Section 8 housing, and all of a sudden we find ourselves subsidizing people that don’t have to graduate from college.”

Rehberg has not said how he will vote on Boehner’s bill."

1. Maybe it's just me, but I don't think many Americans support
the tea party views. It's a good thing these guys are "letting it all hang out" with their craziness. The 2012 elections will be a very different scene once people realize how much the tea party types want to screw with every facet of America.

3. where in the country does a Pell grant fund tuition
let alone tuition plus books
let alone tuition plus books plus housing/board (if not commuting)

I work with a lot of students as they head for college - and are working through their scholarship/grant/loan packages - Pell Grants help - but in the cases I am familiar with - they do not fund college.

Yep these folks are nuts. Logic and reason has no space in their brains - or they are callous and believe that their good fortunes should not be available to other people regardless of how hard they work. No more belief in the meritocracy.

10. Sure not in my sons case
Pell will cover his tuition and student fees this semester but hes relying on student loans to cover housing, meal plan and books. And at this point we ware watching closely to see if the money comes through for the semmester which starts Aug 19th.

6. But corporate welfare is just dandy, right?
Funny how the poor do a far better job of supporting their Country through taxes than the corporations who get the bulk of subsidies and perks do.

7. However, he did not find it bad to get government money
to attend a state college in Montana
It is okay if they use other people's money to go to college, but damn anyone else.

He is worth between $6.5 million and $56 million

8. What's sad is that at LEAST one of these teabag idiots...
...has to have a college-age kid reliant on Pell Grants. I can imagine their angst when the kid comes home with the bill and hands it over.

9. everytime I hear these people
my faith in humanity ebbs a little more.

I could not have attended college without a pell grant. We can't expect to have high paying jobs without a college degree and for many that means pell grants.
