Ok folks there is a slightly bright thing here, MAYBE
Edited on Thu Jul-28-11 09:53 PM by nadinbrzezinski
What we might have seen today is the split of the GOP into at least two factions... and the split might very well be permanent. I expected to see this at the convention... but we have entered WHIG territory here folks.

There are way too many negatives here to celebrate though... way too many negatives. A government that can no longer function is not a healthy government, and we not a failed state YET.

2. It makes the House look even more dysfunctional
thereby giving Obama more justification to launch the 14th Amendment bomb.

5. It's In The Best Interest Of Both Parties To Rid Themselves Of The TeaBaggers......
Perhaps this split will be the catalyst to get the Repugs and the Dems to work together at something. That something would be undermining the Teabaggers. Any thoughts on that?

but somehow I don't see it right now. Would be best for all of us.

12. This shows the problem with the two party system and winner take all elections.
Instant run-off elections would allow alternatives and better competition.

13. Or proportional representation
John Stuart Mill was born 70 years too late.

We really need to have an amendment, since this is in the Constitution...

It is showing some of the serious flaws.

21. You vote for the party, not the actual member
and each party gets a number of members in the chamber equal to the percentage of votes. It means that for example the democratic party will probably break into three parties and the Republicans at least into two of not more. It would also open the way for oh Greens in Congress.

It leads to coalition, on steroids.

THe UK runs on that, to a point

Here a good read

15. IF this truly happens
I would like to see a split in our party too.

Seriously.

There are MANY in this party that I ashamed to admit that we supposedly "share" the same ideology when we clearly do not.

16. That might be coming too
What you are seeing though is literally a political quake of 9.0 or above. We have not seen anything like this in a few generations... No, not even the great depression.

I think we will see the moderate GOP peel off into a new party, or a bunch of independents.

27. Yep the election there was a preview of coming atractions
indeed. I never thought I would be pulling for a former GOP senator.

The way the Whigs broke is not precisely how this will go... but that is what we are watching.
