Proof That The Tea Party Caucus Is Too Stupid To Do Their Job
Oh. My. God.

This from Representative Paul Broun:

Broun: I introduced a bill to lower the debt ceiling, not raise it. And i just think raising the debt ceiling is not the way to go. We need to lower it. We need to pay off the debt.

Let’s pretend, for a moment, that the debt ceiling is just like your credit card (it’s not, but pretending is fun. The GOP does it for a living!). Now, let’s say you have a maximum credit limit of $1000 and you’re maxed out. Now, let’s pretend that you call up the credit card company and tell them you want to cut your credit limit in half so you can pay off your debt. Even if they oblige the crazy person on the phone, THAT STILL DOESN’T MAKE THE MONEY YOU OWE GO AWAY. You still owe it. You spent that money. It’s gone. Done. Used.

The debt limit does not exist because we want to spend more money in the future. The debt limit is the money we already owe. It’s the bill after a meal. We ate the food, now we have to pay for it and the Tea Party wants to dine and dash.

9. Standard Fox Noise talking point
Raising the debt ceiling = giving Obama a blank checkbook, don'tcha know.

A lot of people were pissed when he quoted Reagan, but I thought it was a stroke of genius in trying to get through to these morons.

6. I was talking to someone
who thought that the debt ceiling was what they WANTED to spend.

They had no idea it is what Congress already appropriated and was already spent.

There is just too much stupid out there.

8. You can thank the RW "no more blank checks for the black guy" meme
they have been spreading.

I have come across a few myself. When I explain that this is paying the obligations that the congress has already approved (and their approval would be required for any additional spending), they look at me like I have lost my mind.

Thanks Fox!

Idiocracy, here we come.

11. Yeah, this is the biggest problem...
People are confused that the cash has already been spent. Lots of misinformation out there. The fact that the Republicans turned this into a debate on future budgets is why so many people in the public don't realize what the debt ceiling really is. They don't even realize that Bush ran up $7 trillion in debt, an amount that is no doubt causing the need for a raise in the debt ceiling. The irony is douche bags like Cantor voted for that $7 trillion of debt piled up by Bush, and now they want to just walk away from it as if we have a choice.

7. Someone doesn't understand the debt ceiling and what it represents.
It is mind boggling. Isn't as if there aren't dime-a-dozen economists that have (i) repeatedly explained this and (ii) the tea baggers have yet to find ONE economist to back their position. Not a Friedman in the bunch crazy enough to back these idiots.

Mind. Boggling.
