“One of the truest tests of integrity is its blunt refusal to be compromised.” |
|
--Chinua Achebe, Nigerian writer.
“The 'morality of compromise' sounds contradictory. Compromise is usually a sign of weakness, or an admission of defeat. Strong men don't compromise, it is said, and principles should never be compromised.” - Andrew Carnegie
“From the beginning of our history the country has been afflicted with compromise. It is by compromise that human rights have been abandoned.” - Charles Sumner, American politician and statesman from Massachusetts.
“Compromise is when one person wants to rob a bank and the other person does not, and they compromise to rob a person outside of the bank.” - Christopher Myers, award-winning author and Coretta Scott King award recipient.
“The compromise will always be more expensive than either of the suggestions it is compromising.” - Arthur Bloch, producer/director of the Thinking Allowed PBS television series
“Being a man is the continuing battle for one's life. One loses a bit of manhood with every stale compromise to the authority of any power in which one does not believe.” - H. Rap Brown
“Once you consent to some concession, you can never cancel it and put things back the way they are.” - Howard Hughes

4. I have a personal anecdote about the word compromise. |
|
I was in the process of applying to a university in a foreign country, non English-speaking. Among the correspondence I had received from them was a letter stating that I must show up for a test to measure my ability in their language in the second week of May. My admission was contingent upon passing this exam. This was impossible because I had final exams at my US university at that time. During spring break (late February) I flew over to try to get things sorted out. After consulting with some friends, I headed over to meet the man at the office and I ask if there is some kind of "compromise" we could reach. The word compromise struck him the wrong way. He said "No, there is no compromise." I left his office and meandered down toward the offices of some professors I had studied under at the university. By chance I ran into a professor and asked if he could give me some advice. I explained my situation, he sent me to another professor with a note, the other professor gave me a letter, and with 90 minutes I was back with the man who had rejected my request for a compromise with a letter saying that allowance should be made for me. He said to me as he read the letter "Evidently there is indeed a compromise, and we will give you a semester here before you take your exam."

12. That wasn't a 'compromise'....it was an 'exception'..... |
|
and yes it sounds like an EXCEPTION was made, and necessary, in your case. Glad that a 'common sense exception' worked out for you.
Your example is not a COMPROMISE.

Discourage litigation. Persuade your neighbors to compromise whenever you can. As a peacemaker the lawyer has superior opportunity of being a good man. There will still be business enough. Abraham Lincoln

“Every man cannot have his way in all things. If his opinion prevails at some times, he should acquiesce on seeing that of others preponderate at other times. Without this mutual disposition we are disjointed individuals, but not a society.” –Thomas Jefferson to John Dickinson, 1801

9. The preponderate public opinion is to LEAVE MEDICARE & SS ALONE. Your quotes don't apply. |
|
You and the minority of Democrats who are evidently OK with bargaining away our society's safety nets are WAY behind majority opinion, but nice try.

17. Right now, the only people in America that don't compromise |

are people with no integrity. Their intransigence should be met with equal uncompomising resolve.

Both sides claim the high ground of "integrity" for refusing to compromise.
We'll all go to hell being "right". It's more important than living.

your theory is not practical! the world banks are demanding a 4 trillion dollar cut in spending or a combo of revenue increase plus spending cut to keep our credit rating as is. The latest media hype is the world banking system will lower our credit rating if the congress does not reach this goal! therefore this makes your point suicidal if we do not have compromise (negotiation or what ever you want to pin on it). they also say a short term or two part plan will not be acceptable! so if the congress refuses to pass a plan to satisfy our lenders chaos will rule! of course this is just an opinion but fact is that in many countries inflation follows quickly and can reach 100% in a short period of time! once the domino's start falling it is hard if not impossible to stop! it can't happen here? tell it to the greeks, the russians, the Japanese etc etc it can and it did!
