If you miss your credit card payment, your rate goes up to 29-32%. The "default rate." The situation you've put the nation into right now is exactly the same, except we're talking BILLIONS and TRILLIONS of dollars, and new debt put upon the backs of our children and grandchildren. Are you fucking MAD? How can anyone, in any way, shape or form, see this as HELPING our economy? It leads me to only one conclusion; this isn't about the economy, it's about power and your hatred of the black man in office.

Please, moles, expose yourselves, and tell me how I am wrong.

What default will do to this nation will be FAR MORE damaging than two small airliners plunging into the twin towers. 3000 deaths will pale compared to the long-term carnage inflicted by the stupidity of this showdown. As for your stupid "party", remember that "you reap what you sow". (Look that phrase up if it's never come to your ears before)

17. Not that the teabaggers aren't much, MUCH worse, but...
...not too long ago DU was filled with people screaming "Let it burn! Let it all burn down!" in their outrage against the TARP bailout.

They either...

1) Refused to believe the banking/credit crisis was a real crisis, quite sure of themselves that the crisis was just a ploy, a means to an end -- very much the same way many teabaggers are ignorantly confident that the US defaulting on its debts isn't a real problem. Or...

2) They didn't really care what harm would be caused if the economy collapsed, deciding that "doing the right thing" (in their not-so-humble-opinions about what's right) was much more important, and that it was better to let everything go to hell and rebuild from the ashes.

The big difference between the left and the right here is that when the left was going crazy with the "Let it all burn down!" attitude, it was just a noisy but fairly powerless part of the left. The right's current craziness, however, has gone main stream and hold plenty of seats in Congress.

29. I think the anger was about the 'no strings attached approach'.
No one regulated wall street. In fact, they are doing the same old shit at the same levels of leverage today.

No one broke up the 'too big to fail'. In fact, they all just merged and got even bigger (Wells/Wachovia, BoA/Merrill Lynch, MorganStanley/SmithBarney, etc, etc, etc)

No one has said boo about the side bets known as CDOs and derivatives. In fact, that market is even BIGGER today than in 2008.

I wasn't against it to float the economy, but you are damn sure that I was one that said "let them fail" without reform.

37. That doesn't change the fact that there was a lot of unhinged...
...free-floating damn-the-consequences anger, people who would have been happy for millions of people to suffer so long as the bastards at the top suffered too.

I like what Barney Frank has to say about this. People quite often accept the idea of "collateral damage" in war, that innocents will be hurt, but that a greater good excuses that harm, yet strangely people have a harder time accepting "collateral benefit", the idea of people who don't deserve a benefit getting a huge benefit in the process of doing modest good for a lot more people.

capable of thinking. They can repeat what they're told but never question their overlords. They have all taken the blue pill, safe in their little world believing what they're told...

"This is your last chance. After this, there is no turning back. You take the blue pill - the story ends, you wake up in your bed and believe whatever you want to believe. You take the red pill - you stay in Wonderland and I show you how deep the rabbit-hole goes."

18. No response from the mole-men yet.
I've been in a back-and-forth with a guy on FB, spouting the same shit. "We just need to stop SPENDING!" I explained that the debt ceiling wasn't about spending, rather, it was about paying bills we've already rung up. Didn't matter. His response was "Yes, but we have to stop sometime, otherwise they just keep spending!" There is no logic involved whatsoever. It is truly bizarro-world on the Tea Bagger side of the aisle, and they're sucking the Republicans into their black hole of stupid.

There are more than a few freepers, baggers, and dwellers, who have absolutely no problems with, nor will have any regrets IF the Teathugs drive the nation off the proverbial economic/fiscal cliff, especially IF doing so will hopefully accelerate the inevitably coming day(s) of their being raptured, b/c they and ONLY they piously represent all of what is pure and moral and honest and saintly, and good in the world, all others are obviously the evil spawn of or worship Satan, and are condemned to remain earthbound until the biblical prophesy in the Book of Revelations is fulfilled, and Judgement Day ensues.

I am all for repealing bush tax cuts, but the problem is much bigger than that now. Both sides pillaged SS a d medicare can't sustain against current healthcare costs, and our energy policy equates to blowing Arab sheiks. But that isn't what the op is about. The op said paying the bills, but the debt ceiling discussion is about upping the credit limit. Rage on if you wish, but we are in a tough fucking spot all around and all i see frankly is both sides posturing at the moment and avoiding the real issues, which are going to really freaking hurt.

60. well, I see how worried the repugs were
when Little Boots increased the deficit by 89%, while giving war profiteering corporations huge amounts of our money fighting a fabricated war in Iraq for the global oil boys. And Reagan, that's THE GOD REAGAN, increased the deficit by 128%.

It seems the repugs are really worried that some poor person, elderly or sick might get some help from the damn government on the backs of the deserving rich who shouldn't have to pay taxes because they're so special. Big businesses who take their money overseas instead of creating jobs here still get tax breaks-the wealthy and corporations use much more of the infrastructure, our resources (usually pay little to nothing while we have to pay the clean up) and we protect their business' interests with our lives and taxes and did I mention the subsidies they receive?

You people getting tired of being trickled on yet? Or you just love your corporate masters? Because the wealth disparity in this country has increased to portions not seen since before the great depression, but ya'll still do your master's bidding. All they got to do is mention abortion, homosexuals or immigrants, and they've got your ignorant arse.

Economists that I hold in esteem'; Krugman, Stiglitz, Galbraith, have all said that we need a major job creations bill to get this country moving and that takes money. You got to spend money to make money. We also need to have reasonable taxation for the health and well being for ALL americans. What the repug plan does is take away even more jobs-hundreds of thousands of jobs, while sellling us to the highest global corporate bidder. They'd sell off this country in a heartbeat-our national treasures, every damn one sold to corporations-they'd privatize the shite out of everything and we, the american people, will be paying more, not less while getting shittier service. A corporation's only goal is to make profit-they could give a damn who they are hurting as long as they make a profit-and that is what the repugs want, a truly captive consumer. And if that happens, americans will no longer have any voice, only corporations will have all power-and they are not AMERICAN!

They are products of years of AM talk radio and FOX.

59. Teabaggers main talking point is a lie, S&P cooking the books
Jane Hamsher has a must read article

some snip-its: On July 21, 2010 President Obama signs Dodd-Frank into law. The Dodd-Frank Financial Reform Act stripped away those protections, so that CRA’s were now subject to the same expert liability as an auditor or securities analyst,

In October 2010, S&P issues its first threat to downgrade US debt. The report paints a target on the back of Social Security and Medicare, says nothing about the wars, the Bush tax cuts, private health care costs or the absurdity of 40 year projections.

on April 13: A bipartisan study on the financial crisis from the Coburn-Levin Senate Permanent Subcommittee on Investigations released a report saying the credit ratings agencies were a “key cause” of the financial crisis. Two days later, David Beers reached out to Undersecretary Goldstein to let Treasury know that the Standard and Poors committee has changed its outlook to “negative.”

(sorry for the copy/paste but this may show that S&P is in bed with repugs)

70. You are, in fact, wrong.
Let's say you have a balance of 10K on your credit card at 9.9%. You don't pay, and the default rate kicks in, and you are now paying 30% on that 10,000.

In the case of the US, if we defaulted, we would have to pay higher interest rates on NEW borrowings, but not on the existing date.

/just sayin.

/no, I don't think the country can survive borrowing more and more and more every year.
//not saying we need a balanced budget tomorrow, but within 5 years. raise taxes, cut military in half for starters.

80. Yes, but....
Bill Clinton was white.

If the current president was white, the Teabaggers would never have come into existence. The Republicans would not be behaving this way. If the president was a white man, there would be negotiation and compromise and, perhaps, an honest attempt to right the economy.
But no.

The Teabaggers and Republicans have demonstrated that they prefer an alcoholic cocaine freak of limited intellect over an educated and eloquent man of obvious moral integrity. The difference? The coke-head is white. The good man is black.

That is the bottom line, the explanation for the lunacy of the right wing. The president is black. And he is smarter than they are. And they can't stand it. The racism is so ingrained in the right wing that they will destroy the nation before they will allow a black man to be successful. Civilized nations around the world measure their leaders by their ability to contribute but only the United States includes skin color as a prerequisite. Of course, the USA is the only country in the world that still uses feet/inches, ounces/pounds etc. (Yes, I know... there are two other world powers that still use that antiquated system... Burma and Liberia. Burma... Liberia... and the USA! Hang in there, brothers! Eventually, we the rest of the world, will realize the error of our ways and return to feet and inches, the way Jesus intended!)

When one finally comes to the realization that the right wing's destructive behavior stems from the color of the president's skin, the more sense it makes. The Republicans and Teabaggers are racist even though they deny it the way a Southern Baptist preacher denies being a gay whore-monger sniffing meth off a Brazilian boy's hot butt. But that is their reason for being. And anyone who supports their policies, ideas or even their very existence is a racist traitor.

87. And it seems they take pride in that willful ignorance.
They seem to LOVE it when their leaders show their inability to think! Take pride in not being 'smart' like those 'other folks'. They somehow believe they can 'live off the land' (Red Dawn-like) when 'The Man' blows his wad and the shit truly hits the fan. When you try and discuss things like BILLIONS and TRILLIONS of dollars...you get this look of 'eyes grazed over' incomprehension, it is not that they don't understand - it is just that they don't really give a shit.

Or am I wrong lurkers?

Black vs. white.

Women vs men.

Native born vs. immigrant.

And now old vs. young.

Whenever we fight among ourselves, corporate America laughs. The dupes who think that the Koch Brothers "like" them better than Black folks are so delusional that it makes me want to cry. If given the choice between a member of a minority group with millions and "Joe the Plumber", I know which the Koch Brothers would support. The rich are color blind except for the color green as in money.

109. In the history of the debt ceiling, how many times did SSI
become an integral part of passage of bills in reference to the debt ceiling? None. Also your argument that Rome fell because of a welfare state is sad, you are certainly misinformed about SSI and the way governing works at large. I would suggest go read Wealth of Nations and come back to have a more educated debate. GLHF.
