About Gabrielle Giffords

Giffords studied Latin American history and sociology at Scripps, according to the school's website.

After she graduated, she spent a year in Chihuahua, Mexico, as a Fulbright scholar.

From there, she attended Cornell University, to earn a master's degree in regional planning, and an executive program at Harvard University.

Scripps history professor Julia E. Liss, who taught Giffords in a humanities course in the early 1990s, paused to reflect on the tragedy and on Giffords' interest in justice.

"I have always remembered her as a very bright, intense and engaged student who asked the most important questions in class," Liss said. "She was always concerned with the bigger picture and about what was important to make life more just. I am proud to have been her professor, and my thoughts have been with her, the other victims of this tragedy and their families."

Giffords never lost her connection with Scripps. In 2004, she received the Scripps College Alumnae Association's Outstanding Recent Alumna Award. And she continued to mentor students.
