The primary goal of the association was to promote and encourage rifle shooting on a scientific basis.

7. For the entire first century

of the NRA's existence the only real function was firearms proficiency and safety. To this day they have provided more gun safety education than any other org on the planet. They are likely responsible for more averted accidents with firearms than any other group. This is why drawing some sort of correlation between the founding of the NRA and the topic of this OP is so silly.
