What Republicans Aren’t Telling You About the Debt

If you’ve been tuning in to C-Span this week and watching members of congress speak on the debt ceiling, you’ve probably noticed a pattern amongst the Republicans. They say things like “American families tighten their belts, why can’t the U.S government?”. This is quite an intruiging question, considering Republicans are the ones who really need to do the belt tightening.

See there’s quite a few things you will never hear a Republican member of congress admit. Republicans are relying on the short-term memory of the average American voter in order for them to come off as fiscally responsible. This couldn’t be further from the truth.

Did you know 82% of our national debt was spent by 3 different Republican administrations? Through Ronald Reagan’s bogus “trickle-down” economics in which he cut taxes for millionaires and billionaires, and George W. Bush’s trillion-dollar revenge wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, Republicans drove up the national debt by record-setting numbers.

Did you know that on May 17, 2011 Republicans filibustered Democrats’ attempt to do away with $21 billion oil subsidies for big oil companies that are turning record profits? And on March 2nd of this year, every single Republican member of congress voted “NO” on a measure that would eliminate big oil subsidies. Where is the “belt-tightening” here?

1. "American families tighten their belts" refers to their servants, not themselves

3. When it comes to tight belts,
the people I know and talk with can't tighten them anymore and are ready to sell their belt if they can get something for it. The tempting alternative is that belts have other uses and the rafter looks inviting sometimes.

Despite my own situation, the horror stories of loss and destitution, (in certain areas/states) abound both online and in person. The scene is heartbreaking.

While some are still situated and maybe even living in areas where the impact is not yet felt, the problems are snowballing down our slippery slope.

It is not hard to imagine a Banana Republic future here now, and third-world status lifestyles for many is not so hard to consider taking hold.

4. For working class republicans, this is way over their head to understand.
