"Debt" is by definition something already owed. The purchases have already been made. |

And the Republicans voted for every one of them: tax cuts for billionaires, unfunded prescription drug benefits, and two wars. Now, however, they have decided not to pay the check; and, by the way, it's all the Democrat's fault! Seriously, how many Americans realize that the ceiling needs to be raised in order to pay for debts already incurred? And yet the Republicans are allowed to get away with pissing and moaning about a non-existent "blank check" for the President. The damned check has already been written! The Repugs signed it! Now they wish to retroactively claim insufficient funds. Is this a great country, or what?

I am thinking of going into debt and I establish just how far into debt I can afford to go, hence a "debt ceiling"....The entire reason for a "Debt Ceiling" is so we can not go further into Debt than we projected..If the money was already spent we would not be worrying about not being able to spend right now. Spending such as Social Security and Veteran's benefits etc.
