This makes my head hurt - Samosas banned
Al-Shabaab, the extremist Islamic group that effectively controls much of Somalia, has banned samosas in the famine-stricked, war-torn East African nation, according to the Kenyan Daily Nation. Apparently the ban, which was announced via loudspeaker, was instituted because Al-Shabaab leaders decided the samosa's triangular shape was too closely associated with the Christian trinity. Locals face punishment for cooking, buying or eating the meat- or vegetable-filled pastries.

This hasn't been a good month for samosa-religion relations. Just a few weeks ago, a group of New Jersey Hindus sued a restaurant for covertly serving them meat samosas, in violation of their religious adherence to a vegetarian diet.

3. I am seriously starting to doubt evolution
All the talk of neanderthals of late and look at what the "evolved" apes find time to worry about.

5. here's the American version of that story
the Haboob controversy in Arizona:

(...)

“I am insulted that local TV news crews are now calling this kind of storm a haboob,” Don Yonts, a resident of Gilbert, Ariz., wrote to The Arizona Republic after a particularly fierce, mile-high dust storm swept through the state on July 5. “How do they think our soldiers feel coming back to Arizona and hearing some Middle Eastern term?”d he’s not much worried about default, saying: “I hope the Lord blesses our nation in a way that is measurable.”

11. I wondered how long it would take some enterprising DUer to take ...
a post about some batshit crazy Islamic extremists and try to turn it into a post about some batshit crazy Americans.

6 minutes seems about right.

18. One should hope . . .
Edited on Fri Jul-29-11 06:55 PM by Richard D
. . . those poor soldiers never have to salute their admiral, study chemistry, drink alcohol, study algebra, eat an apricot, artichoke or even a piece of candy; drink coffee, wear cotton, have a mint julep or have some lime in their beer, or sleep on a mattress. Those are just a few arabic words, and I only got to 'M'.

12. They do. The Samsa, more like a really small loaf of
bread with the filling inside.

Think we will go Sunday and have one just to celebrate the fact that we can.

23. Well, after samsa, shashlik, lepeshka and baclava, it makes me

really appreciate what immigration brings to this country.

I guess I am going to have to make my own bahjis - it's on my list, along with working up a dough
that works in our ovens. At least until I can build our version of a Tandoor ;)

13. There's also a racial undercurrent
People of Indian ancestry have frequently been targeted for hate by black majorities in several African countries. Many Indian immigrants to the USA had actually come here from Uganda, Zimbabwe, and other countries. They sought asylum against racial and religious persecution.

17. People are starving in Somalia.
And enduring horrors I hope never to see. Roll the damn dough into a circle. Shape it like a calzone or pita or fold it differently, for Pete's sake. What despots to make a rule banning common fare in a land where people are hungry! Crazy.
