Can the Senate put a clean debt ceiling bill to a vote? |
|
I mean assuming someone was smart enough to craft one?

2. Yes, they can. But first they are putting up Reid's bill up for a vote. |
|
But any bill the dems put up, it will take 60 votes to be able to invoke cloture. And whatever bill gets passed in the Senate will have to pass in the House too before going to Obama for his signature.

3. depends on what you mean by "clean" |

A short term (1-2 months) bill probably could if everyone thought a full solution was within reach. But probably nothing that lasts longer. Obama doesn't want anything that needs to be debated again until 2013. Republicans don't want anything that will last that long (not sure why they want another debate before the elections since they are loosing). That's the impasse for even a "simple" (no tax or spending changes) bill now.
