I always write my bills out on the 1st of every month so they are not late.
Knowing my Social Security check will be direct deposited on the 3rd.

Do I write my checks, so I don't get late payments added & pray I get my check on the 3rd. Or do I wait to see if I get my check & get late fees?

P.S. Theres no margin for late fees.

1. From what I understand SS checks will be paid anyway.
Active Duty Military will not.

16. It was on MSNBC for sure, it may have Rachele Maddow Show.
They showed a list put out by the Treasury Department. They had a list of things that would be paid on the left of the screen and SS was one of them. The things that won't be paid were on the right and Active Duty Military was at the top of that list.

6. I would call your creditors and ask them to note your concerns in their system
just in case.

As I told one elderly family member this afternoon, these idiots in the House are playing with fire and it may take delayed SS checks to jerk a knot into their shorts in order to get them to wake the hell up before the entire country burns down.

13. I do that even when I travel
Ask them to note in the system that I will be in X area during y period so charges aren't flagged as being suspicious.

I would just ask them to note that you are going to be paying your bill as you always have, but to put in the system that your income is SS. That way, if anything does go south, they can see where it was pre-reported and will make it easier to say yes to you on waiving late penalties or other fees.

Best wishes. Lets hope this doesn't go down like it is threatening to.

7. I don't write checks for anything until I know the money is in the bank
Edited on Fri Jul-29-11 08:50 PM by NNN0LHI
The direct deposit for my pension didn't get posted one month because it had been mistakenly sent to the wrong account number.

I highly recommend not writing any checks until you confirm the direct deposit has been deposited into your account every month.

I did not receive my pension check last Month from Florida & no one has yet to give me an answer as to why I don't have it.

11. Hold off as long as you can without incurring the penalties.
Maybe the situation will be clearer in a few days.

And I'm terribly sorry to hear about your crisis. So many people stand to be hurt with the whole wave of plain old right-wing meanness sweeping the country.

12. For the SS payment to be available on the 3rd, it would have had to be sent on the 2nd
Files of Automated Clearing House credit transactions are sent out one day, processed through the ACH networks, processed overnight in your bank's demand deposit accounts system, and available in your account the next day.

But to be sure, check with your bank.

15. Well...
If the bills are not due until later in the month, you can wait a few days anyway.

There was talk about more tax revenue being available to extend the time until the debt ceiling is reached, my guess is that the clock will not strike midnight on Aug 2nd; so payments will go out then, but shortly after money will run out if nothing is done.

17. That's why I pay my bills online.
Too many accounting errors have delayed some of my friends SS so I always check my direct deposit before I pay my bills and then just pay the bills straight from that account. The payments are processed the sane day and arrive at my creditors by the 5th.
