Fort Myers crime up 11% since 2010

FORT MYERS -
Crime is on the rise in Fort Myers. Officers have handled nearly 200 more calls during the first six months of 2011. That's a nearly 11% increase over 2010.

Almost every category saw a rise in crime. Murders more than doubled and burglary, theft, and assaults also saw large increases.

Fort Myers Police Chief Doug Baker says he's "disappointed and concerned" by the jump in crime.

"What we're finding is you have individuals that from the economy are committing thefts and commercial burglars that may have never done that before," Chief Baker says.

People are really hurting and it looks like there is no end in site. Look what ended up happening because of the 1930's

5. I think that was implied here.

6. That was the premise for "I Was A Fugitive From A Chain Gang".
A guy down on his luck was convicted of being an accomplice to a crime and sentenced to a very long sentence which included hard labor.

8. Great movie from our last depression era
That other depression when regular folks, not bankers and corporate tycoons , were supported by their federal government.

11. If you're going to steal, do it right. Buy and loot a global bank or corner a market.
The White House and Congress will come with money, tonnes of it. Please, just take it - go on, we insist.

We'll even throw in the pretty girl as part of the deal. No questions asked - spend it however you like. We don't really care if you ever pay it back.

14. Sorry, I misread your post levy........
So I'll just let mine stand by itself. :)

If you're an average person thinking of crime, don't make it a crime against people who don't have anything either. Like Willie Sutton said to answer why he robbed banks, "Because that's where the money is." Considering shoplifting? Shoplift big corporate stores.

16. A guy I worked with years ago always told me if you are going to rob some place
make it a bank, if you get caught the federal prisons are nicer than the state prisons.

17. Yeah, I've always thought that too.........
I don't know if it still applies, but back in the day I would rather have gone to Federal prison than state.

12. Crime is mostly down nationwide - by a lot in some places...
The idea that the bad economy would lead to more crime hasn't panned out.
