McConnell's behavior on the Senate floor yesterday solidified this thought/hypothesis for me.
It goes like this:
Republicans feel they have an edge with their base if they can paint Obama as a radical. If they can paint Barack Obama is an undercover mole Manchurian Candidate for a Pinko Commie takeover of America, all the better. Remember the guys with guns outside of the health care town halls? They liked how that went down and they'd like to whip up that kind of hysteria again. But they're having some difficulty finding those sorts of boogeyman aspects of Obama because, in reality, Obama is a right-leaning centrist Democrat to begin with.
So they have to do, have to initiate, have to precipitate something which will cause President Obama to take a kind of unprecedented unilateral action which they will use to re-inflate their boogeyman again. They don't necessarily care what that boogeyman might cause Americans to do, or what the fallout might be- they just need to goad, coax or force Obama into making that move and they believe they'll be able to hang whatever it possibly is around his neck, around the Democratic Party's neck, like a millstone which (they hope) will be used to weaken him in 2012.
Will we default? I was taught not to make last-minute bets when the odds are against me but I'm thinking that no, we won't. If, as the result of a pure legislative impasse, we come to the Point Of No Return, the President will come up with
something to avert the economic destruction of America as a result of a default.
But whatever the
something is, is going to be radical, unprecedented. Because that's the corner they have painted him into and that's the corner he's allowed himself to be led into. The more radical the move, the more trouble Republicans will have hiding the food boners in their Bermuda shorts.
While the Republicans are
not the only group trying to make the situation worse to exploit it for their own self interests, I feel this is the zeitgeist of the Republican leadership leading up to this crisis.
This manufactured, constructed, crafted, planned crisis.PB
