http://blogs.abcnews.com/thenote/2011/07/deadlock-in-the-senate-continues-reid-mcconnell-argue-it-out-on-the-senate-floor.htmlFireworks lit up the Senate floor again today between Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-NV., and Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-KY., again highlighting the large space and tension between them, as the clock ticks frightening close to Aug. 2.
Reid’s bottom line: he is accusing Republicans of filibustering his bill, which there will be a cloture vote on Sunday morning at 1 am and accusing McConnell of not compromising. (Republicans are making this a 60 vote threshold to end debate on this bill– which Reid doesn’t have the votes for, Reid wants it to be a simple majority thus why he accusing the Republicans of filibustering, even though it’s a standard Reid too has called for before).
McConnell’s bottom line: he trotted out a letter with 43 of the 47 Republicans in the Senate united in opposition to the Reid plan, meaning that Reid’s plan won’t pass as it stands now in the Senate. And he is accusing Reid of filibustering his own bill, by not wanting a cloture vote right now on the Reid bill. Today McConnell put pressure on President Obama to be more involved in the final days of negotiations.
These arguments – starting at the start of the Senate’s session today – played out rather theatrically on the Senate floor today, as each of the leaders went back and forth, quipping at the other.
