I'm thinking it might be better to stand up to the tea party bullies now
even if the result is not get the debt ceiling raised, as bad as that would be for the country. I know of only one way to stop bullies--and even the mainstream Republicans in congress are bullies--and that is to stand up to them and refuse to let them have their way. They have been holding governance hostage for years by not threatening to fillibuster anything and everything, shutting down the government, and now holding the entire economy hostage. The thing is, it works for them and as long is it works, they will continue to do it. They will, one step and a time, take everything we have and give it to the rich. According to Reid, they are demanding cuts to entitlements in order to pass a debt ceiling now. They will demand this before they pass a budget, before the raise the debt ceiling, and for every other important bill. I say stand up to them now and just say no. And let them take the political fall out for their actions. I predict they will come around pretty quickly and will think twice about hostage taking in the future. As bonus, this probably would bring a wave of new Democrats to DC in the next election, once they show some backbone.

1. My take
On this is to get this passed so that it goes beyond the election next year, after that the tea party will probably be history or at least relegated to irrelevancy. (my deepest and sincerest hope) If not the country deserves them.

2. I must agree even if many suffer in the short run
if we don't stand up now within two years they will chip away everything we stand for, then many will be suffering for the long run. I am willing to compromise, but from the way it looks to me the Democrats have already met the Republican half way, but to the Republicans compromise means we do all the giving and they do all the taking.

3. IMO the way the democrats are managing this they are consistently emboldening
the bullies. The democrats needed to draw a line in the sand a long time ago and say this is it, this is what we stand for and we aren't budging.

Endless compromise is nice to talk about and would be nice to have, but with certain personality types compromise does not work. It just does not work, but only serves to embolden the behavior one is trying to change. Anyway, this is how I see it and I don't think I'm alone in thinking this way.

5. Amen......Obama has capitulated himself into a corner. At least once in the first two years he.....
needed to take a stand even if it meant not getting a compromise.

At least then the Pukes would have at least thought he was capable of a stand on principle moment.

The tax cut extension was the perfect time to say no and now the Pukes know that in the end he will cave.

4. Mainstream Republicans are like drugged out meth head parents who let their teabagger kids run wild
Obama needs to ready that veto pen and his exectuive order that authorizes the debt ceiling increase via the 14th Amendment.

7. I heard this argument in 2000
My friends who supported Nader believed that if things get bad enough there will be a progressive revolution. As we know now, it didn't work out that way.

8. OK, Picture this...
The don't pass it...

Things start to crumble... no student loans, letters go out. Delayed SSI and Social Security payments, letters go out. Systemic failures as regulation and inspection cease. Parks closed.

The Dems put up a clean limit increase. It either passes or it doesn't.

Failing that, the 14th is invoked and now the money flows again and we enter 2012 with one thing perfectly clear...

NO GOVERNMENT IS A BAD BAD THING.

How does the Tea Party spin that into an Obama problem. The Tea Party agenda would be manifest.
