Phillies former manager Dallas Green's grief: 'My princess is gone' (girl slained in AZ)

I just started bawling again. This girl had an amazingly bright future and it was gone in a snuff of a second.

Dallas Green's grief: 'My princess is gone'

"I can't believe my princess is gone." That's what former Phillies manager Dallas Green told the team's general manager, Ruben Amaro Jr., over the phone yesterday while en route to Arizona, reacting to the murder of his 9-year-old granddaughter.

Christina Green was killed in the hail of bullets in the assassination attempt on U.S. Rep. Gabrielle Giffords on Saturday as she waited in line to meet the congresswoman in Tucson, Ariz.

It was a stunning and tragic end to a life that began just hours after the terror attacks of Sept. 11, 2001, a coincidence that led Christina to be picked to represent Pennsylvania in a book of 9/11 babies called Faces of Hope.

The ambitious 9-year-old was growing up with dreams of becoming a politician and was recently elected to student council at Mesa Verde Elementary School in Tucson, where she had moved when her dad, also in baseball, became a scout for the Los Angeles Dodgers.

On Saturday, Christina stood in line with a neighbor, eager to meet Giffords in front of a neighborhood Safeway about 10 a.m.

2. I'm so sorry for this family's pain
Children are so special--there is no doubt about that.
But unless you are a Grandparent...you can't understand the significance of a grandchild and how incredibly wonderful they are. I didn't until I had them.

4. I believe that this special child had a destiny
It brought her into the world and it took her out.
It is up to all of us to help shape that destiny.
I'd like for it to be the removal of hate radio from the airwaves--because THEY held the gun while Loughner pulled the trigger.

5. I have always taken my children and grandchildren with me to political events
Never though twice about it. They even helped with several campaigns. During early voting they would carry signs up and down the street across from a polling place. They too wanted to meet the candidates, they have shook the hands of sitting members of the House and potential Senators They all enjoyed doing their part. But never again. I will never again allow them to accompany me to political events.

6. I quit during the primaries
Too much hate in our area and too many low info voters. Bad combo.
I worked a booth at a local fair for my State Representative to hand out bumperstickers, etc.
I was bullied constantly from teabaggers.
It is insane and unfortunately the last place that I would take a child.

7. Way back when----Dallas Green played for the Phillys
He lived near enough to me that he would come out sometimes and help coach our Babe Ruth team. He was a very cool guy and we all liked him just as a friend. I have lost a child myself and I know how this family feels. My heart goes out to them.

9. My condolences to this grieving grandpa

I can't imagine his pain

In nine years time...I don't recognize this country at all

I don't get these white terrorists trying to stoke fear and why it had to reach this point

and why we let the media continue to fan the flames

even after this child's death

i cannot understand us anymore
