AZ State Repub Jack Harper blames Sheriff Dupnik for Giffords Shooting
Edited on Mon Jan-10-11 03:52 PM by RamboLiberal
State Rep. Jack Harper, R-Surprise, blamed the shooting on Pima County Sheriff Clarence Dupnik, who has himself blamed caustic political rhetoric and lax gun-control as contributing to the massacre.

"If he would have done his job, maybe this doesn't happen," Harper told USA Today on Monday. "Sheriff Dupnik did not provide for the security of a U.S. congresswoman."

"When everyone is carrying a firearm, nobody is going to be a victim," Harper continued. "The socialists of today are only one gun confiscation away from being the communists of tomorrow."

4. actually Fred Upton won out over Barton to become Chair of the Energy and Commerce Committee
Barton was given the honorary title of "chairman emeritus" and he is a member of the Committee and each of its subcommittees, but does not hold any leadership (chairman or vice chairman) position on the committee or its subcommittees.

7. de nada. BTW, one of the reasons Barton didn't get the chairmanship
was that there was some concern in the repub caucus because of his sucking up to BP. Technically, the repubs "seniority" rules barred him from becoming chairman, but the repub caucus could've waived those rules if they really wanted Barton to get the job.

6. Didn't witnesses say
He came up around or behind her and point blank shot her in the head? How would being a quick-draw-McGraw have helped in this situation?

Do people really think that having a scenerio where everyone is armed and shooting to defend themselves is really the answer? There is a 9 year old child among the dead who would be alive right now if not for gunfire.

I've always been anti-gun. Never even let my kids have toy guns. Don't even like someone pointing a finger pretending its a gun.

11. I'm glad you brought that up
I've been wondering since Saturday about this. If AZ is an open carry state, and the folks that promote open carry often cite crime stats and their right to protect themselves when attacked, then why did no one else at that event have a weapon to shoot back?

12. I thought about that too
But you know, she is a Democrat and it appeared to be a pro-dem crowd (I didn't notice any evidence of protesters, signs, etc.). Generally democrats and liberals don't carry guns to our events.

We are just kind of funny that way I guess... :sarcasm:

8. I'm sure that as a state representative, MR. Harper, has seen that every county in Arizona has
more than adequate funding for their sheriff's offices and plenty of deputies, being paid overtime, to provide security to US reps.

9. Makes me think...
the Sheriffs Dept. had contact with Jared on several occasions. Why wasn't he arrested for psychological evaluation?

10. If everyone had been carrying a firearm and used it when the shooting happened, ...
we'd be looking at 19 dead and 6 injured -- at best.

No, tackling him and wrestling with him worked.

And neither tackling nor having one's own gun would have had any effect on the beginning of the shooting nor the rapid repeat firing of the Glock.

And under Arizona law, the one that the Governor herself signed (the one requiring no permit to carry a concealed weapon), no law enforcement personnel could have done anything to prevent the shooting.
