The real change should come from Congress.
If republicans in congress have any sensibility, any conscience, any sense of accountability, any... soul, frankly, they should change the tenor of the dialogue. Right now. Out of respect for the dead, the injured, the surviving families and out of respect for and recognition of the impact carried by their own positions of leadership. No one should have to prove a connection between their rhetoric and the potential for violence. They are intentionally inciting people in order to play hero in their votes so they'll get a continued infusion of money and power.

The incessant filibustering.
The continuous rhetoric on the floor and on camera demonizing the left.
The creation and repetition of known falsehoods, too many to name.
Reducing every single issue to 'us vs them.'
And so on.

At this point, perhaps they can begin to feel some shame, because they know in their hearts what role they played in this. Regardless of what's proved or not in this particular case, this should be a wakeup call to conscience for them. They're the leaders. Don't blame it on Loughner's mental condition, or his pot smoking, or anything else. Take a stand for what is right. Don't participate in continuing the demonization for your own personal benefit. Its insidious effects, cumulatively, are chillingly apparent.
