Harold Ford, Jr.: Newt Gingrich stopped sending freshman Congressmen to learn about government..
Ford said that when he came to Congress it was the practice to send freshmen to the Kennedy School at Harvard to get some basics on the political process in this country. Newt Gingrich stopped that practice. He thought Harvard was not the place for these new lawmakers to learn how the government works.

This fact was brought out after Barnicle suggested that all new Congresspersons should be sent to a class in U.S. government and history.

Well, now we see the results of THAT folly...

3. Perhaps aspirants to the position of 'freshman Congressman' should
take it upon themselves to prepare prior to running for office.

That would be a neat requirement - must be aware of the basics of the U.S. government and history.

5. If memory servces, he DID send them to a training program...
...but it was managed by the AEI, rather than the "liberal bias" folks at Harvard.
