Extreme weather takes $32B toll so far this year

CHICAGO (MarketWatch) -- Storms, floods, tornadoes, drought and other extreme weather events have cost the U.S. $32 billion in economic losses so far this year, AFP reported Thursday. Jack Hayes, the director of the National Weather Service said thousands of homes and millions of acres of farmland have been affected and said the nation has a "growing vulnerability to these events." And not just money has been lost: AFP noted that tornadoes have killed more than 540 people in 2011, the largest tally in over 60 years.
