VW makes push for U.S.with new Passat
VW makes push for U.S.with new Passat

Volkswagen’s new Passat is bigger, cheaper, made in America and central to its plans to be the world’s largest automaker.

Shown today at the Detroit auto show, the navy blue four-door sedan was introduced by five jumping steel drum players who pounded furiously just before the sedan rolled out on a trail of smoke.

The car will sell for $20,000 and will get an estimated 43 miles per gallon. It will be built at a new $1-billion plant in Chattanooga, Tenn.

And Volkswagen will create 12,000 new jobs in the U.S. – 2,000 at the plant and 10,000 spin-off supplier jobs across the country, said Jonathan Browning, CEO and president of Volkswagen of North America.

3. That's a heckuva jump in mileage... must be TDI (turbo, direct-injection diesel).
The price is certainly right.

5. Yes, the TDI will get 43
But the 2.5L gas will still get a respectable 31mpg.

The 2012 Volkswagen Passat will have three engine options namely a 2.5 litre gasoline engine, a 2.0 litre TDI Clean Diesel and a 3.6 litre VR6. The 2.5 litre engine is expected to offer 170 hp, torque of 177 lb.-ft and fuel consumption at 31 mpg. Meanwhile, the Clean Diesel can churn out 140 hp, 236 lb.-ft. of torque and deliver 43 mpg on the highway. The VR6 can deliver 280 hp, torque of 258 lb.-ft. and does 28 mpg.

9. I have the Audi A3 TDI...
which I believe has the same engine as the new Passat -- I get 32-35 in town, and about 38 on the highway driving 75-80 mph. If I drove a more sedate 60-65, I'd probably get 40+ mpg, assuming I didn't get shot or run off the road.

7. Then at least they can't blame their union when they get sold out
the GM bailout and everything that followed was disgusting.

11. the CleanDiesel engine from VW is one of the most
advanced engines on the planet. Relatively powerful, compact and incredibly efficient with a clean tailpipe to boot.

13. We had a Passat several years ago...It was the absolute worst car we have ever had
It was great when it was running, but it was not running for most of the time we had it. It was actually in a repair shop for several months. They could find nothing wrong with it, it just would not start.

We finally had it towed to another dealer and used it as a part payment on a used Hyundai Santa Fe.

Our Passat was a piece of shit...and please check all the online complaints about VW's terrible customer service and huge repair bills before you actually spend money on one of these dogs...They suck.

Maybe the cars built in the US will be better...Hyundai makes cars here, too and they are great.

15. You must've gotten a real lemon...
We have TWO VW Diesels, one made in Brazil and one in Germany. What very minor problems we've experienced have been taken care of in a very efficient and proactive way by our local dealer. I'd buy VW's again if these ever wear out, which I really don't anticipate.

Once I pay off my Tiguan, I'd like to get the electric as my daily commuter.
